、Designation: D 6934 08Standard Test Method forResidue by Evaporation of Emulsified Asphalt1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 6934; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A num

、ber in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This test method covers the quantitative determinationof residue in emulsified asphalts composed principally of asemisolid or liquid aspha

、ltic base, water, and an emulsifyingagent.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of t

、he user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2. 5、estingPurposes3. Significance and Use3.1 The test may be used to indicate compositional charac-teristics of emulsified asphalt. Evaporation residue may also besubjected to other characterization tests.3.2 This test method for residue by evaporation tends togive an asphaltic residue lower in penetrat

、ion and ductility thanthe distillation test method (D 6997). Material may be acceptedbut shall not be rejected as failing to meet specificationscontaining requirements for determination of residue by distil-lation, on data obtained by evaporation. If residue fromevaporation fails to meet the require

、ments for propertiesspecified for residue from distillation, tests shall be rerun usingthe distillation test method.4. Summary of Method4.1 A sample of emulsified asphalt in an open top beaker isheated in an oven at 163 6 3C to determine the percentage ofasphalt residue. The residue from the evapora

Sample Conditioning for Testing5.1 All emulsified asphalts shall be properly stirred toachieve homogeneity before testing.5.2 All emulsified asphalts with viscosity testing require-ments of 50C shall be heated to 50 6 3C in the originalsample container in a water bat

、h or oven. The container shouldbe vented to relieve pressure. After the sample reaches 50 63C, stir the sample to achieve homogeneity.5.3 Emulsified asphalts with viscosity testing requirementsof 25C should be mixed or stirred at 25 6 3C in the originalsample container to achieve homogeneity.NOTE 1E

、mulsified asphalts with viscosity testing requirements of25C may be heated and stirred as specified in 5.2 if necessary. In theevent the 5.2 method is used, the sample should be cooled to 25 6 3Cbefore testing.6. Apparatus6.1 Beakerslow form, 1000-mLcapacity, made of glass ormetal.6.2 Glass Rodswith

Weigh 50 6 0.1 g of thoroughly mixed, emulsified asphalt into each of three beakers.7.3 Place the beakers containing the rods and sample in theoven, whi

It is permissible for the technicianto observe the beakers periodically and prevent boilover by stirring thesample. The placing of beakers and emulsified asphalt samples in a coldor

、 warm oven and bringing the oven and sample up to a temperature of163C together is also permissible.NOTE 3If preferred, preliminary evaporation of water may be accom-plished by careful heating on a hot plate, followed by oven treatment at163C for 1 h.8. Procedure B8.1 Use Procedure B when tests on t

、he residue from theemulsified asphalts are required.8.2 Proceed in accordance with 7.2 and 7.3 using four 50 60.1 g samples. After the calculation for percentage of residue, replace the beakers in the oven until the asphalt residue issufficiently fluid to pass through a 300-m sieve (usuallyrequiring

、15 to 30 min). Pour the residue through the 300-msieve into suitable containers and molds for residue testing.9. Calculation and Report9.1 Calculate the percentage of residue on each beaker asfollows:residue, % 5 2A 2 B! (1)where:A = weight of beaker, rod, and residue, g; andB = tare weight of beake

、r and rod, g.9.2 Report the percentage of residue by evaporation as theaverage of all the beakers tested provided the maximumdifference in the measurements is less than or equal to 0.4 %.If any of the measured values differs by more than 0.4 % fromthe other measured values, that data point should be

、 rejected inthe calculation and the average of the remaining data pointsshould be reported.10. Precision and Bias10.1 The following criteria should be used for judging theacceptability of results (95 % probability):10.1.1 Duplicate results by the same operator should not beconsidered suspect unless

、they differ by more than the follow-ing amount:Residue by Evaporation, Repeatability, weight %weight %50 to 70 0.410.1.2 The results submitted by each of two laboratoriesshould not be considered suspect unless they differ by morethan the following amount:Residue by Evaporation, Reproducibility, weig
