、Designation: D 6937 04Standard Test Method forDetermining Density of Emulsified Asphalt1This standard is issued under the fixed designation D 6937; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number
、 in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of density ofemulsified asphalt used in highway construction. This unit iscomputed by determining
、the mass of an emulsified asphaltcontained in a standard measure of known volume.1.2 This test method does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and
、 determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2. Significance and Use2.1 This test method provides a controlled laboratory testfor the determination of quantitative volumes of emulsifiedasphalt for use in bills of lading, invoicing, and applicationrates.3. Sample Conditioning
、for Testing3.1 All emulsified asphalts shall be properly stirred toachieve homogeneity before testing.3.2 All emulsified asphalts with viscosity testing require-ments of 50C shall be heated to 50 6 3C in the originalsample container in a water bath or oven. The container shouldbe vented to relieve p
、ressure. After the sample reaches 50 63C, stir the sample to achieve homogeneity.3.3 Emulsified asphalts with viscosity testing requirementsof 25C should be mixed or stirred at 25 6 3C in the originalsample container to achieve homogeneity.NOTE 1Emulsified asphalts with viscosity testing requirement
、s of25C may be heated and stirred as specified in 3.2 if necessary. In theevent the 3.2 method is used, the sample should be cooled to 25 6 3Cbefore testing.4. Apparatus4.1 Density CupStainless steel measure of known stan-dard volume (83.2 mL).4.2 Balancecapable of being read to the nearest 0.01 g.4
、.3 Water Bathconstant-temperature, maintained at 25 60.5C.5. Procedure5.1 Stir the emulsified asphalt sample and place in aconstant-temperature water bath maintained at 25 6 0.5C forapproximately 1 hr.5.2 Place the measure and its cap on the balance, tare, andzero the balance.5.3 Remove the emulsifi
、ed asphalt sample from the bath andstir, using care to avoid trapping air in the sample. If necessary, strain through a 850-m sieve to remove any skin or film thatmight be present in the emulsified asphalt.5.4 Bring the measure to approximately 25C and pour theemulsified asphalt into the measure, fil
、ling it completely.5.5 Start placing the cap into the measure and remove, witha clean dry rag or paper, the excess emulsified asphalt oozingthrough the orifice in the cap.5.6 When the cap is placed on tightly, clean the measurecarefully, weigh on the tared balance to the nearest 0.01g, andrecord.6.
、Calculation6.1 Calculate the density of the emulsified asphalt as fol-lows:W 5 G!11.98! (1)where:W = unit density of the emulsified asphalt, as expressed ing/L, andG = mass of emulsified asphalt in the measure, g.NOTE 2If the desired units are to be expressed in pounds per gallonat 25C, then the cal
、culation would be W = G/10. Pounds per gallon at25C may be translated to pounds per gallon at 15.6C by using amultiplier of 1.00475. The calculation of Imperial gallon mass may bemade by using the proper conversion factors.7. Report7.1 Report the unit density of the emulsified asphalt in g/Lto the n

Precision and Bias8.1 The following criteria should be used for judging theacceptability of results (95 % probability):8.1.1 Duplicate results by the same operator should not beconsidered suspect unless they differ by more than the follow-ing amount:1This test method is u
