Summary of Practice3.1 Water droplets are placed on a paint film that is in itsearly stages of drying. Stains left behind are evaluated forintensity and how the appearance

、 of the coating has changed.4. Significance and Use4.1 Surfactant staining is a common problem with exteriorhouse paints, particularly when subjected to humid environ-ments (such as morning dew) shortly after application.4.2 Interior paints used in humid areas such as kitchens andbathrooms may also

、experience surfactant staining.4.3 Leaching of water-soluble materials may be dependenton colorant dispersions that are mixed into tint base paints.Other paint components may also affect the leaching ofwater-soluble materials.5. Procedure7.1 Apply the test paint along the long dimension of theblack plastic panel using the selected film applicator. Allow todry

、for 4 hours at standard atmospheric conditions of 73.5 63.5F and relative humidity of 50 6 5 % as specified inSpecification D 3924. Use the same film thickness whencomparing a series of latex paint films.7.2 Divide the test panel into three sections, labeling them 4Hours, 1 Day, and 4 Days or times

、agreed upon by themanufacturer and supplier. (Fig. 1)7.3 Place a row of four droplets of distilled water at roomtemperature across the top of the first designated section of thetest paint. Each droplet shall be approximately 0.1 cc involume.7.4 Allow the water droplets to stand for 10 minutes. Thenl

、ift the panel into a vertical position so the water droplets rundown the section of the paint film being evaluated.7.5 Repeat steps 7.3 and 7.4 after 1 and 4 Days, or otherdesignated intervals, in their respective sections of the testpanel.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D
