Scope1.1 This practice stipulates the types, names and sizes ofCodes for those material types specified in Table 1.1.2 The

3、 values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated ineach system are likely not to be exact equivalents; therefore,each system shall be used independently of the other. Combin-ing values from the two systems is likely to result in non-co

4、nformance with the standard.1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations

5、prior to use.NOTE 1There is no known ISO equivalent to this standard.2. Terminology2.1 Definitions:2.1.1 Resin Identification Code (RIC; Code)a molded,imprinted or raised symbol or wording that consists of anequilateral triangle comprised of clockwise chasing arrows, aResin Identification Number, an

6、d an Abbreviated Term forpolymeric material in compliance with Fig. 1 and Table 1.3. Significance and Use3.1 Resin Identification Codes are used solely to identify theplastic resin used in a manufactured article.3.2 Resin Identification Codes are not “recycle codes.” Theuse of a Resin Identification

7、 Code on a manufactured plasticarticle does not imply that the article is recycled or that thereare systems in place to effectively process the article forreclamation or re-use. The term “recyclable” or other environ-mental claims shall not be placed in proximity to the Code.3.3 This practice is bas

8、ed upon the system developed in1988 by the Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc (SPI).4. Requirements4.1 The Code is to be molded, formed or imprinted on themanufactured article.4.2 The Code shall be clear and legible.4.3 The size of the Code shall normally equal or exceed 12mm (12 in.) in height a

9、nd width.NOTE 2For small parts or components, it is not always possible toconform to these size requirements. In these cases, it is important tomaximize the size and legibility of the Code.4.4 The Code shall be placed in an inconspicuous locationon the manufactured article, such as the bottom or the

10、 back,where it will not be obvious to the consumer at the point ofpurchase so it does not influence the consumers buyingdecision.4.5 The Code shall be as shown in Table 1. Option A iscommonly found in North America. Option B is often foundinternationally. Either option is acceptable.4.6 The numberin

11、g system within the triangular clockwisechasing arrows shall correspond to the generic class of resinsshown in Table 1.4.7 The Code with the Resin Identification Number “1” andthe Abbreviated Term “PETE” is reserved for manufacturedarticles produced from Polyethylene Terephthalate.4.7.1 The Code wit

12、h the Resin Identification Number “1”and the Abbreviated Term “PETE+” is reserved for manufac-tured articles produced from Polyethylene Terephthalate thatalso contain at least one additional layer of a different material.This Code does not require the modification of existing tooling.This Code shall

13、 apply to all new tooling.4.8 The Code with the Resin Identification Number “2” andthe Abbreviated Term “HDPE” is reserved for manufacturedarticles produced from High Density Polyethylene.4.8.1 The Code with the Resin Identification Number “2”and the Abbreviated Term “HDPE+” is reserved for manufac-

14、tured articles produced from High Density Polyethylene thatalso contain at least one additional layer of a different material.This Code does not require the modification of existing tooling.This Code shall apply to all new tooling.4.9 The Code with the Resin Identification Number “3” andtheAbbreviat

24、fered a means of identifying the resin content ofbottles and rigid containers commonly found in the residentialwaste stream. Currently 39 states have adopted legislationregarding the use of Resin Identification Codes consistent withthe SPI Code. It also is in use in China, and the U. K. and isnow re

25、commended by the British Plastics Federation andPlasticsEurope (formerly the Association of Plastics Manufac-turers in Europe).X1.2 The Resin Identification Code system has become onemeans by which interested parties identify the resins used invarious manufactured articles. Alternative resins and mo

26、reselective end-of-life options (such as retailer take back pro-grams) for manufactured articles have also emerged since1988.
