、Designation: E1042 02 (Reapproved 2014)Standard Classification forAcoustically Absorptive Materials Applied by Trowel orSpray1This standard is issued under the fixed designation E1042; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision

、, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This classification covers materials applied by trowel orspray to surfaces for the purpose of increasing

、welveone-third octave bands from 200 through 2500 Hz, inclusive, measured according to C423.4. Significance and Use4.1 Acoustically absorptive materials are used for the con-trol of reverberation and echoes in rooms. This standardprovides a classification method for acoustically absorptivematerials a

、pplied directly to surfaces by trowel or by spray.5. Basis of Classification5.1 Classification is made according to type of material, acoustical properties, flame spread, and dust propensity.5.2 Material TypeClassification of acoustically absorptivematerial according to material type is as follows:5.

、2.1 Type IMaterial is cementitious. Type I ingredientsshall be uniformly mixed and ready for use by the addition ofwater. When received, the material in the container shall be dryand shall not be caked or sticky. After the material has beenproperly mixed with the amount of water specified by themanu

、facturer, the material shall be of such a consistency that itcan be applied with a plastering trowel or with a suitableplaster-spraying machine.5.2.2 Type II, Material is fibrous. Type II material shallconsist of mineral or organic fiber with an integrally mixedbinder, or it may be supplied for use

、with a liquid binder addedat the time of application.5.2.3 Type III, Material is cellular plastic and is intended forapplication over beams, walls, ceilings, and columns. Type IIImaterials are normally designed to be mixed at the time ofapplication.5.3 Noise Reduction CoeffcientClassification of aco

See Test Method C423 for more discussion of NRCand SAA.5.4 Flame Spread IndexAcoustically absorptive materialshall be classified according to its flame spread index as

、follows:5.4.1 Class (a)The flame-spread index of the acousticalmaterial shall not exceed 25 when tested in accordance withTest Method E84, nor shall the material show evidence ofprogressive combustion after the test flame is extinguished. Allsurfaces, including those which would be exposed by cuttin

、.2 Category BDust removed is greater than 0.27 g/m2when tested in accordance with Test Method E859.NOTE 5Classification according to dust propensity is usually specifiedonly by certain agencies of the US Government.6. A separate measurement of absorption shall beperformed for each NRC grade under this standard classifica-tion.6.2 Flame-Spread

、Index (see 5.4)The flame-spread indexshall be determined in accordance with Test Method E84.6.3 Dust Test (see 5.5)When required, the dust test shallbe performed in accordance with Test Method E859 except thatthe measurements of the dust collected will be terminated afterthe first 24-h test period.

、The reported dust removed will be thedifference between the amounts of dust collected at the end ofthe 6-h and the 24-h purging periods.7.
