Scope1.1 This guide covers guidance to design professionals inthe evaluation of materials, products, or systems with whichthey a

3、re not familiar and to help determine that the selectedmaterials, products, or systems are suitable for use on or as apart of an exterior building wall.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of thi

4、s standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2. Significance and Use4.1 This guide may be used by design professionals andothers in the building construction industry to provide factualsupport for professional judgment of materials, products, orsystems during the design development of new and remed

6、ialexterior building wall construction.4.2 This guide is intended to provide guidance to the user ofthis standard in the evaluation and qualification of materials,products, or systems with which they do not have substantial,long-term experience or that are intended to be employed in anew or differen

7、t manner. The standard may be used toinvestigate and assess the probable performance of suchmaterials, products, or systems in relation to the proposed useon or as part of an exterior building wall.4.3 The procedures outlined in Section 5 will help guide theuser in making informed selections based o

8、n the materials,products, or systems performance history on constructedprojects and provide information on limitations of use, themanufacturers performance history, and current status. Theuse of this guide will reduce, but not eliminate, the risk ofin-service performance problems with materials, pro

9、ducts, orsystems.4.4 The procedures listed in this standard are intended foruse in selecting materials, products, or systems that are criticalto the safety, function, or serviceability of a building, or wherethey constitute substantial components of the work. Therecommendations in this guide are not

10、 applicable to allmaterials, products, or systems that can be incorporated inbuildings. The user must exercise appropriate judgment andcare regarding the need when applying the various proceduresincluded in this guide, including the use of the form includedin Appendix X1, with regard to particular m

11、aterials, products,or systems, and specific buildings. Materials, products, orsystems that will be used for a noncritical or incidental useusually do not require an exhaustive evaluation. Materials,products, or systems with which the user has first-handexperience do not generally require an exhausti

12、ve evaluationsince many of the evaluation tasks listed herein should havebeen performed previously.4.5 Appendix X1 is provided for the user of this guide as atool in organizing their thoughts and approach to application ofthe guide. It may also provide useful documentation to the userfor both the bu

13、ilding under current consideration and as afuture reference for other buildings. Other forms of documen-tation may be developed by contract agreements or require-ments of authorities having jurisdiction.NOTE 1Often components of exterior building wall construction aretested in the laboratory to help

14、 assure adequate performance. Laboratoryevaluation of materials, products, or systems is not described in this guide.5. 17、ist of projects where the materials, products,or systems for each project were used, including:5.1.1.1 Dates of installation;5.1.1.2 Name of project, address, owner, contact persons,type of use, phone number;5.1.1.3 Name of contractor, subcontractor, contact persons,address, phone number; and5.1.1.4

18、 Name of engineer or architect, contact persons,address, phone number.5.1.2 Obtain pertinent research reports, test data, and certi-fications for the materials, products, or systems from inceptionto help evaluate current characteristics, changes, and their usesover time.5.1.3 Ask the manufacturers f

19、or a listing of specific changesin the materials, products, or systems over time includingimprovements, changes in physical and chemical components,geometry, production methods, and quality control.5.1.4 Obtain specifications, tech sheets, safety recommen-dations, installation standards, compatibili

20、ty tests, approval ofpublic authorities and industry associations, and compliancewith ASTM and industry standards.5.1.5 Obtain the manufacturers written response as tosuitability of the products for their intended uses after supply-ing the manufacturer(s) with anticipated use conditions for themater

21、ials, products, or systems including the project descrip-tion, specifications, and drawings.5.1.6 Documentation of the materials, products, or systemsevaluation is encouraged by this guide. However, documenta-tion and the use of the form of Appendix X1 is a decision leftto the judgment and needs of

22、the user.5.1.7 Evaluate the production capacity and quality controlmeasures of the manufacturer. If necessary, visit production,curing, storage, and shipping facilities.5.1.8 Obtain specific technical background and test resultsfor factual confirmation and quantification where the manufac-turers lit

23、erature contains general characterizations such asbreathable, ultraviolet (UV) resistant, waterproof, corrosion-resistant, fire-resistant, and similar claims.5.2 Past performance.5.2.1 Contact owners, designers, contractors, and mainte-nance organizations with first-hand experience regarding themate

24、rials, products, or systems to assess performance history.Note the effect of different uses and climates on performanceand durability.5.2.2 Visit completed installations to observe the materials,products, or systems in place, being careful to assure they areused in a manner similar to the contemplat

25、ed use. Visit new andold installations to evaluate the effects of aging and in-serviceexposure. Where possible, visit installations reflecting applica-tions and exposure conditions similar to the contemplated use.5.2.3 Review maintenance requirements for the material,product, or system. Compare them

26、 to probable maintenanceprocedures to be expected for the proposed application. Con-sider these issues:5.2.3.1 Available funds and resources for maintenance;5.2.3.2 Owners history of maintenance performance;5.2.3.3 Availability of qualified maintenance personneltrained in required procedures and met

27、hods; and5.2.3.4 Accessibility for maintenance.5.2.4 Verify availability and capability of mechanics withspecific and successful experience in installing and servicingthe materials, products, or systems.5.2.5 Investigate problems uncovered during this evaluationto attempt to isolate design, workmans

28、hip, and manufacturingfactors contributing to the problem.5.3 Manufacturers performance.5.3.1 Review and evaluate warranty documents and evalu-ate the warranters willingness to act on warranted provisions.5.3.2 Verify the level of post construction technical supportthat may be expected. Determine if

29、 help is likely to beavailable promptly and from technically knowledgeable per-sonnel should the need arise during or after construction.5.4 Literature survey.5.4.1 Review published information about the materials,products, or systems, or similar generic products and theirlimitations. Record specifi

30、c examples of buildings where theseor similar materials, products, or systems have been usedsuccessfully.5.4.2 Check with local and national code organizations andcode enforcing agencies for changes, approvals, and limitationsof use for the materials, products, or systems.5.4.3 Examine technical ref

31、erences and performance data toconsider weaknesses and limitations and to assist in determin-ing a length of performance record.5.4.4 Examine publications of the regulatory and approvalagencies for the country of origin and for nondomestic mate-rials, products, or systems that do not have domestic a

32、pprovalsand test reports.5.5 Summary of selection judgment.5.5.1 Make a judgment of the desirability of incorporatingthe materials, products, or systems into the project. Consider-ations to include, among others, are first cost; anticipatedservice life; required maintenance; and consequence of inad-

33、equate performance, such as the ease or difficulty of repair orreplacement should the materials, products, or systems prove tobe deficient.5.5.2 Inform the owner of the building for which thematerials, products, or systems are intended about the state ofknowledge of the materials, products, or syste

34、ms; the risksinvolved in their use for the subject building; and the advan-tages and disadvantages associated with their use includingspecific information discovered during the evaluation process.5.6 Appendix X1 is intended to provide a tool for the user ofthe Standard in organizing his or her thoug

35、hts and approach toapplying the guide. It can also be used to document the resultsof his or her findings for the building under consideration, andfor future reference on other buildings.6.
