、Designation: E 2189 02Standard Test Method forTesting Resistance to Fogging in Insulating Glass Units1This standard is issued under the fixed designation E 2189; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revi

、sion. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (e) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This test method covers procedures for testing theresistance to fogging of preassembled permanently sealedinsulating glass uni

、ts or insulating glass units with capillarytubes intentionally left open.1.2 This test method is applicable only to sealed insulatingglass units that are constructed with glass.1.3 The unit construction used in this test method containsconstruction details that are essential components of the test.D

、ifferent types of glass, different glass thicknesses and differ-ent airspace sizes may affect the test results.1.4 This test method is not applicable to sealed insulatingglass units containing a spandrel glass coating due to testinglimitations.1.5 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as

、 Conshohocken, PA 19428-2959, United States.6.1.1 The dimensions and components are found in Fig. 1.The construction of the apparatus shall be capable of maintain-ing 50 6 3C (122 6 5F). In order to maintain thistemperature, a fan shall be mounted in the box. The fan shallrun continuously.6.1.2 The

、apparatus shall be constructed from sturdy, solidmaterials that minimize the escape of ultraviolet light into thesurrounding area.12 or34 in. plywood has been found suitablefor this purpose. Stainless steel construction is also acceptable.6.1.3 The interior of the apparatus shall have a reflectivesu

、rface. If plywood is used to construct the apparatus, then linethe entire interior of the apparatus with aluminum foil or otherreflective material.6.1.4 The test specimen supports are located as shown inFig. 1.6.1.5 The cooling plates are constructed of a conductivematerial such as copper or brass.

、The cooling plates shall benominally 150 6 5 mm (5.91 6 0.20 in.) diameter and shall beplaced directly in complete contact with the glass surface forthe duration of the test. Alternatively, a rectangular coolingplate shall be 0.0177 6 0.0006 m2(27.4 6 1.0 in.2) in area.6.1.6 The cooling water temper

、ature is determined as thewater immediately exits the apparatus from each cooling plateas shown in Figure 1. The cooling water temperature at theselocations shall be 21 6 2C.6.2 Ultraviolet Light Source:NOTE 2Warning: Ultraviolet light sources used in this test methodare harmful to the human body, e

、specially to the eyes. Appropriateprotective measures must be observed.6.2.1 The source shall consist of one ultraviolet lamp. Thislamp shall be an Osram Ultra Vitalux 300W Lamp6and isplaced as shown in Fig. 1. The output of the UV source shall6Available from Westburne Electric, 635 Westburn Drive,

、re clean.8. Procedure8.1 Chamber Preparation:8.1.1 The cooling plate shall be clean and the contactsurface shall be flat.8.1.2 For double-glazed units with low-e coatings, the coldplate shall be located on the low-e coated lite.8.2 Test Procedure:8.2.1 Mount the two selected specimens within a volat

、ilefog test apparatus similar to that shown in Fig. 1 and close thelid before turning on the UV lamp.8.2.2 Turn on the UV lamp source.8.2.3 Maintain all thermocouples (shown in Fig. 1 as TC1,TC2, TC3 and TC4) at 50 6 3C (122 6 5F). The fan andvents can be used to regulate this temperature. The tempe

、raturedifferential from thermocouple #1 to thermocouple #2 shall notexceed 3C (5F). The temperature differential from thermo-couple #3 to thermocouple #4 shall not exceed 3C (5F).8.2.4 Maintain the temperature of the cooling water at 21 62C (70 6 5F). Determine the temperature of the coolingwater im

、mediately after it leaves the test apparatus for eachcooling plate.8.2.5 Alternatively, an electric chilling apparatus can beused to control the cooling plate at the required temperature asnoted in 8.2.4. Determine the temperature of the cold plateportion of this device.8.2.6 The specimens shall be

、exposed to these conditionsfor a period of seven days or as determined by the specifier.8.2.7 For triple pane units, both cavities shall be tested. Twounits shall be tested with the exterior lite (as identified by themanufacturer) towards the cooling plate and two units shall betested with the inter

、ior lite (as identified by the manufacturer)towards the cooling plate.8.3 Remove the test specimens from the test apparatus.Examine them carefully for fog by holding at arms length(approximately 500 to 750 mm (20 to 30 in.) from the eyeswith light behind the specimen. Move the specimen to anyangle n

、ecessary to thoroughly check the surface of the glass forfogging.8.4 If fog is not observed, record the observation. Thetesting is complete.8.5 If fog is observed, record the observation and conditionthe test specimen(s) for 24 h at room temperature. After the24-h period, reexamine the specimen(s),

、as in 8.3.8.6 If fog is not observed at the 24-h observation, record theobservation. The testing is complete.8.7 If fog is observed (at the 24-h observation), record theobservation and condition the test specimen an additional 6days. After the 7 day period, reexamine the specimens, as in8.3.8.8 The
