3、e in berths for officers,crew, and passengers in marine vessels. This shall be consid-ered a minimum standard.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. Ordering Information4.1 Orders for items purchased under this specification shalldefine the following:4.1.1 MattressesQuantity, dimensional requirements, type(solid core or innerspring), and weight per each size.4.1.2 Box SpringsQuantity, dimensional requirements,and

23、 weight per each size.4.1.3 Upholstery material selections are to be offered aschoices by the manufacturer or distributor to the purchaser. Theselection shall be of good quality suitable for commercial useand for use aboard U.S. Navy vessels.4.1.4 When first article of inspection is required, it sha

24、ll bespelled out in the paperwork.5. Materials and Manufacture5.1 Innerspring MattressThe essential components of aninnerspring mattress are: an innerspring core, cushioning,upholstery ticking (either quilted or with a smooth top, andpotentially including a flange), and a border. Optional compo-nent

25、s include various insulating layers or pads, flanges, andtapes. All materials used shall meet the mechanical propertyand fire performance requirements of Table 1. All materialsused shall comply with appropriate commercial bedding indus-try standards of manufacture and durability. Any constructionof

26、an innerspring mattress that is suitable for its intended useand that complies with the performance requirements shownherein shall be permitted to be used.5.1.1 Innerspring CoreThe innerspring core shall be con-structed from an all-wire carbon steel. The coils shall extendthe full length and width o

27、f the mattress. The coils shall bepermanently secured to provide long-term structural stability.Various core designs shall be permitted. The support propertiesof the innerspring core, in terms of firmness rating, durability,resistance to impact, firmness retention, and surface deforma-tion, shall be

28、 assessed by Test Methods F 1566. The coils, orthe complete spring unit assembly, shall be given suitablethermal treatment to relieve residual stresses caused by coiling.5.1.2 Cushioning and Insulator LayersAn insulator padshall be placed over each sleeping surface of the innerspringcore to insulate

29、 the upholstery from the core. The variouscushioning layers shall be constructed of materials that meetthe performance requirements of Table 1.5.1.3 Ticking and Cover AssemblyThe cover constructionshall be suitable for the type of mattress construction used.Upholstery ticking materials shall be dura

30、ble, per commonbedding industry practices. The ticking for each sleepingsurface shall be cut in one piece without fabric splices. Theticking for the mattress border shall be made of not more thantwo pieces of ticking, with the ends spliced and sewn togetherin a continuous manner leaving no gaps or v

31、oids in uniformityand finish. The border assembly shall be secured to the top andbottom sleeping surfaces of the mattress, by automatic sewing,per common bedding industry practices.5.1.4 BorderThe ticking for the mattress border shall bemade of not more than two pieces of ticking, with the endssplic

32、ed and sewn together in a continuous manner leaving nogaps or voids in uniformity and finish. The border assemblyshall be secured to the top and bottom sleeping surfaces of themattress, by automatic sewing, per common bedding industrypractices.5.1.5 TapeA tape shall be permitted to be used to concea

33、lthe seams formed between the border, if present, and anupholstery panel.
