A number in p

Asuperscript epsilon () indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.INTRODUCTIONThis consumer safety specification addresses crib incidents that were identified by the U.S.Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).CPSC receive

3、d reports of strangulations incidents associated with crib corner post extensions andincidents concerning failure of crib hardware and other structural components of cribs that alsoresulted in fatalities.In response to the incident data collected by the CPSC, this consumer safety specification attem

4、ptsto minimize the risk of injury or death due to: failure of mattress support hardware, failure of gluedor bolted connections, side latch failure, and dislodgment of teething rails. This safety specificationalso addresses incidents associated with poor maintenance or assembly by means of requiremen

5、ts forthe contents of instructional literature that must accompany a crib.1. Scope1.1 This consumer safety specification establishes perfor-mance requirements and test procedures to determine thestructural integrity of full-size cribs. It also contains designrequirements addressing entanglement on c

6、rib corner postextensions, and requirements for warning labels and instruc-tional material. It also covers bassinet, changing table, orsimilar accessories to a crib that when in the manufacturersrecommended use position are in the occupant retention area.These accessories shall also comply with the

7、applicable re-quirements of the ASTM International standards addressingthose accessories. For example, a changing table that attachesto a crib shall also comply with the applicable requirements inConsumer Safety Specification F2388. This specification doesnot cover inflatable products.1.2 No crib pr

8、oduced after the approval date of this con-sumer safety specification shall, either by label or other means,indicate compliance with this specification unless it conformsto all requirements contained herein.1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in

9、parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.1.4 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to thetest methods portion, Section 7, of this specification: Thisstandard does not purport to address all of the safety con

It is the responsibility of the userof this standard to establish appropriate safety and healthpractices and determine the applicability of regulatory limita-tions prior to use.2. Calibration and Standardization4.

23、1 All testing shall be conducted on a concrete floor whichmay be covered with18-in. (3-mm) thick vinyl floor covering.4.2 The crib shall be completely assembled, unless other-wise noted, in accordance with the manufacturers instructions.4.3 No testing shall be conducted within 48 h of manufac-turing

24、.4.4 The item to be tested shall be in a room with ambienttemperature of 73.4 6 9F (23 6 5C) for at least 24 h prior totesting. Testing shall then be conducted within this temperaturerange.5. General Requirements5.1 Before performing any of the tests in this specificationall wood parts shall be smoo

25、th and free of splinters.5.1.1 All wood parts shall be free from splits, cracks, orother defects that might lead to structural failure.5.2 Surface CoatingsThe paint or surface coating on theproduct shall comply with 16 CFR 1303.5.3 Small PartsThere shall be no small parts as defined by16 CFR 1501 be

26、fore testing or liberated as a result of testing tothis specification.5.4 Corner Posts:5.4.1 No corner post assembly shall extend more than 0.06in. (1.50 mm) above the upper edge of an end or side panel,whichever is higher, when measured from the lowest point onthe upper edge of the end or side pane

27、l within 3 in. (76 mm)from the outermost contour of the post or elbow (see Fig. 1).5.4.1.1 This requirement applies when any moveable side/folding side is in either the raised or lowered position.5.4.2 The limitations in 5.4.1 do not apply to a corner postassembly that extends at least 16 in. (400 m

29、gments (such as canopypost extensions) shall not permit the attachment of individualsegments such that the resultant vertical extension would be inviolation of the dimensional requirements of 5.4.5.5 Slat ConstructionSlats shall not contain any lateral/transverse joints such as finger-joints, and ot

30、her means ofjoining pieces of lumber end-to-end are not permitted.5.6 Crib Side Configurations:5.6.1 Cribs with side(s) having movable components in-tended to aid in access to the occupant shall have those sidesrigidly attached to the crib ends and contain no movablesection less than 20 in. (51 cm)

31、above the top of the mattresssupport in its lowest adjustable position.5.6.2 Cribs with only stationary sides shall meet the follow-ing criteria: The height of the uppermost surface of any tophorizontal rail shall be at least 15 in. (38 cm) above the topsurface of the mattress support in its highest

32、 adjustableposition.5.6.3 Should any adjacent sides of a crib that have slats orspindles have a height difference between their top rails ofmore than 6 in. and either of their top rails are less than 40 in.(102 cm) high as measured from the top of the mattress supportin its lowest position to the to

33、p of the sides, then the higher ofthe two sides may not have a toe hold (as defined in 5.9) thatis located more than 6 in. (15 cm) below the top of the side.The height difference shall be measured within 6 in. (15 cm) ofthe intersection of the two sides. This provision does not applyto folding or mo

34、veable sides. The top horizontal rail of anadjacent side shall not be considered a toe hold. This provisiondoes not apply to toe holds located less than 3 in. (7.6 cm) fromthe top of the mattress support in its lowest position as allowedin 5.9.5.7 Full-Size Baby CribsDimensions:5.7.1 The interior di

35、mensions shall be 28 658 in. (71 6 1.6cm) wide as measured between the innermost surfaces of thecrib sides and 5238 658 in. (133 6 1.6 cm) long as measuredbetween the innermost surfaces of the crib end panels, slats,rods, or spindles. Both measurements are to be made at thelevel of the mattress supp

36、ort in each of its adjustable positionsand no more than 2 in. (5 cm) from the crib corner posts orfrom the first spindle to the corresponding point of the firstspindle at the other end of the crib. If a crib has contoured ordecorative spindles, in either or both of the sides or ends, themeasurement

37、shall be determined from the largest diameter ofthe first turned spindle within a range of 4 in. (10 cm) above themattress support in each of its adjustable positions, to acorresponding point on the first spindle or innermost surface ofthe opposite side of the crib.5.7.2 Rail HeightThe rail height d

38、imensions shall be asfollows:5.7.2.1 The height of the rail and end panel as measuredfrom the top of the rail or panel in its lowest position to the topof the mattress support in its highest position shall be at least9 in. (22.8 cm).5.7.2.2 The height of the rail and end panel as measuredfrom the to

39、p of the rail or panel in its highest position to the topof the mattress support in its lowest position shall be at least 26in. (66 cm).5.8 Spacing of Crib Components:5.8.1 The distance between components (such as slats,spindles, crib rods, and corner posts) shall not be greater than238 in. (6 cm) a

40、t any point. Measurement of distance betweencontoured or irregular slats or spindles shall be done by a 238-in. wide by 4-in. high by 4-in. long (6-cm wide by 10-cmhigh by 10-cm long) rectangular block that shall not passthrough the space.5.8.2 The distance between such components shall notexceed 21

41、2 in. (6.3 cm) when a 20-lb (9-kg) direct force isapplied in accordance with the test method in 7.8. Forcontoured or irregular slats or spindles, the spacing shall notpermit passage of a 212-in. wide by 314-in. high by 314-in.long (6.3-cm wide by 8.2-cm high by 8.2-cm long) rectangularblock above an

42、d below the loading wedge when a 20-lb (9-kg)direct force is applied in accordance with said test method.5.9 Toe HoldsCrib end panels and sides or any attachmentthereto shall have no horizontal bar, ledge, projection, or othersurface accessible to a child inside the crib capable of beingused as a to

43、ehold located more than 3 in. (7.6 cm) and less than20 in. (51 cm) above the mattress support in its lowest positionwhen the side rail is in its highest position. In no case will anygap between the top surface of the mattress support and thebottom of the lower horizontal rail be permitted. For thepu

44、rposes of this paragraph, any horizontal ledge or projectionwith a depth dimension greater than38 in. (1 cm) shallconstitute a toehold. The top horizontal rail of an adjacent sideshall not be considered a toe hold.5.10 Hardware and FastenersA crib shall be designedand constructed in a manner that el

45、iminates from any hardwareaccessible to a child within the crib the possibility of thehardwares presenting a mechanical hazard through pinching,bruising, lacerating, crushing, breaking, amputating, or other-wise injuring portions of the human body when the crib is innormal use or when subjected to r

46、easonably foreseeabledamage or abuse.FIG. 1 Illustration of Requirements for Crib Corner PostExtensionsF1169 1035.10.1 Wood ScrewsWood screws shall not be used in theassembly of stationary sides, folding sides, or stabilizing barsto crib ends or other components that must be removed by theconsumer i

47、n the normal disassembly of a crib.5.10.1.1 No crib shall require consumer assembly of keystructural elements using wood screw fasteners. This shall notapply to drawers or other storage components or accessoryitems.5.10.2 Factory assembly using wood screws on key struc-tural elements is allowed if t

48、he wood screws are a secondmethod of attachment or the wood screws include a lockwasher, glue or other means to impede loosening or detach-ment.5.10.3 Metal inserts with external wood screw threads forscrewing into a wood component and providing internalmachine threads to accommodate a machine screw

49、 shall beglued or include other means to impede loosening or detaching.5.10.4 Wood screws are permitted to be used as the primaryfasteners or only fasteners for non-key structural elements.5.10.5 Metal threaded fasteners, such as sheet metal screwsand machine screws, secured into metal components and usedto attach key structural elements shall have lock washers,self-locking nuts, or other means to impede loosening asdefined in 6.6.2 or detachment during the testing required bythis specification.5.11 Toy accessories attached to, removed fr
