Classification4.1 Strainers may be classified into three general construc-tion categories,

、 simplex, duplex (or multiplex), and automatic(self-cleaning), as follows:4.1.1 SimplexA strainer consisting of a single basket orelement chamber that normally requires the flow through theunit to be shut down before cleaning.4.1.1.1 Classifications of simplex strainers based on portalignment relati

、ve to basket or element chamber are Y, T, Z, andothers.4.1.2 Duplex (or Multiplex)A strainer usually consistingof at least two basket or element chambers separated by a valve(or valving) that permits continuous flow of fluid through onechamber while the other is accessible for cleaning.4.1.3 Automat

、ic (Self-Cleaning)A strainer providingsome means for back-flushing or cleaning of the strainingelement while the unit is in service. It can have one or moreelements and may require periodic shutdown for maintenanceand inspection.4.2 Strainers may be further classified by pressure ratingsand types of

、 port connections, port alignments relative to unitcenter lines, cover closures, valve types (in duplex), types ofbaskets or elements, materials of construction, and otherfeatures of design.5. Ordering Information5.1 Orders for products under this specification shall includethe following information

、 as applicable. If a manufacturersstandardized product is being ordered, include all data neededby the manufacturer to define the product.5.1.1 Make.5.1.2 Model (simplex or duplex).5.1.3 Port size.5.1.4 Port connections.5.1.5 Maximum allowable pressure/temperature rating.5.1.6 Body and cover materia

、l.5.1.7 Type of cover closure.5.1.8 Basket (element) material.5.1.9 Basket hole size.5.1.10 Optional design features.5.1.11 Certification (see 8.1.2.1 and Section 9).5.1.12 This ASTM standard designation number.5.1.13 Additional requirements or testing as contracted bythe manufacturer and purchaser.

、5.2 If a product is to be specified by performance criteriarather than model description, then the following should bespecified:5.2.1 Maximum allowable clean pressure loss at a givenflow capacity of a given liquid at a given velocity.5.2.2 Temperature and pressure.5.2.3 Straining area.5.2.4 Minimum

、basket rupture differential pressure (see7.4).5.2.5 Maximum valve seepage rates (see 7.3).5.2.6 Certification (see 6.2, 8.1.2.1, and Section 9).5.2.7 For self-cleaning strainers, specify basket cleaningeffectiveness and endurance testing.5.3 In general, the standard product description should notbe

、mixed with the performance criteria because conflictingspecifications can result (for example, maximum allowablepressure loss inconsistent with product size).6. Materials and Manufacture6.1 Strainer housings, as well as any pressure-retainingparts, including bolting used for pressure retention, shal

、l beconstructed of materials listed in Section VIII, Division 1 of theASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (hereafter calledASME Code) or ANSI/ASME B31.1. Bolts, screws, andfasteners in contact with interior fluid shall be of appropriatecorrosion-resistant material.6.2 The pressure ratings establish

、ed under this specificationare based on materials of high quality produced under regularcontrol of chemical and mechanical properties by a recognizedprocess. The manufacturer shall be prepared to submit acertificate of compliance verifying that his product has been soproduced and that it has been ma

、nufactured from materialwhose chemical and mechanical properties are at least equal tothe requirements of the appropriate standard or specification.6.3 For materials not having values of allowable stresstabulated in Section VIII, Division 1 of the ASME Code, allowable stresses shall be determined in

、accordance with theprocedures outlined in Subsection C and Appendix P of thatsection. Where it can be shown that the values of allowablestress listed for a particular material in one product form(because of similar chemistry, mechanical properties, heattreatment, and so forth) are applicable to the

、same material inan unlisted product form, the listed values of allowable stressmay be used.6.4 Seals and parts, other than pressure-retaining parts andbolting used for pressure retention, shall be of materialssuitable for the service.6.5 Users are cautioned against applications with fluidswhich may

、react chemically with any materials used in theseproducts in contact with the fluid.6.6 Cast iron shall be limited to services below 450F(232C). Cast iron fittings conforming to B16.1 and B16.4 arelimited to Class 125 and Class 250.7. Other Requirements7.1 The maximum allowable working pressure (MAW

、P)and maximum design temperature (MAT) rating of strainerscovered under this specification shall be established by at leastone of the following methods:7.1.1 Proof test in accordance with the requirements pre-scribed in paragraph UG-101 of Section VIII of the ASMECode. If burst-type tests as outline

、d in paragraph UG-101(m)are used, it is not necessary to rupture the component. In thiscase, the value of B to be used in determining the MAWP shallbe the maximum pressure to which the component wassubjected without rupture. Safety of personnel shall be givenserious consideration when conducting pro

、of tests. Compo-nents that have been subjected to a proof test shall not beoffered for sale.7.1.2 Design calculations in accordance with the require-ments prescribed in Section VIII, Division 1 of the ASMECode.F 1199 88 (2004)27.1.3 Extensive and successful performance experience un-der comparable s

、ervice conditions with similar materials maybe used as a basis for rating provided all other provisions ofthis specification are met.7.2 Pipe end connections for strainers shall be in accordancewith one of the standards listed in 2.2 and 2.3 or as agreed uponbetween the purchaser and manufacturer (s

、ee 5.1.13).Threaded pipe connections shall be limited to the followingpressures:34 in. (19 mm) NPS and below.1500 psig (10.3 MPa) max1 in. (25 mm) NPS and below.1200 psig (8.27 MPa) max2 in. (50 mm) NPS and below.600psig (4.14 MPa) max3 in. (76 mm) NPS and below.400psig (2.76 MPa) max7.3 Duplex (or

、multiplex) strainer valve seepage rates shallbe minimized to prevent undue spillage of fluid under normaloperating conditions while the element is being serviced orcleaned in accordance with the manufacturers procedures.Maximum seepage rates with a specified liquid at a specifiedpressure and tempera

、ture may be as contracted by the manu-facturer and purchaser (see 5.2.5), and provision may be madeto include a test to determine acceptability before acceptancefor a given application.7.4 Baskets or elements shall withstand a minimum of10-psi (0.069-MPa) differential pressure without rupturing orsu

、ch other differential pressure as contracted by the manufac-turer and purchaser (see 5.2.4) for the application involved.8. Test Methods8.1 Test all strainers by one of the following methods:8.1.1 Conduct a hydrostatic test at 112 times the 100F(37C) rated MAWP of the strainer. Perform the test with

、 wateror other liquid having a maximum viscosity of 40 SSU at125F (52C) with a maximum pressure test temperature of125F. The minimum duration of the test shall be 15 s forstrainers less than 2-in. (50-mm) nominal pipe size (NPS), 1min for strainers 212 through 8 in. (63 through 203 mm), and3 min for

、 larger sizes. The purpose of this test is to detect leaksand structural imperfections. No visible leakage is permitted.8.1.2 Strainers 2-in. (50-mm) NPS and smaller with otherthan flanged connections may, at the option of the manufac-turer, be air tested to the lesser of 1.2 times the MAWP or 80psi

、g (0.55 MPa). The minimum duration of the test shall be 15s. Visually detectable leakage is not acceptable.8.1.2.1 If this option is exercised, the manufacturer shall beable to certify that a prototype of the same size strainer wassubjected to a hydrostatic test in accordance with 8.1.1.9. Certifica

、tion9.1 When specified in the purchase order or contract, themanufacturers certification shall be furnished to the purchaserstating that samples representing each lot have been manufac-tured, tested, and inspected in accordance with this specifica-tion and the requirements have been met.
