Terminology3.1 For definitions of glass and glass products te

6、rms used inthis specification, refer to Terminology C162.3.2 For definitions of candle related terms used in thisspecification, refer to Guide F1972.4. Performance Requirements4.1 Annealing:4.1.1 Transparent GlassContainers examined under po-larized light in accordance with Test Methods C148 shall,

7、afterannealing, show no greater than real temper number 4. Thisperformance requirement will also apply to containers that arefurther processed (such as ceramic enamel decorations), fol-lowing the original manufacture, by reheating the containerabove the strain point and cooling to room temperature.

8、TheScratch Test (Section 5) can be used as an alternative to TestMethods C148. Containers tested in accordance with theScratch Test shall show no fractures.4.1.2 Non-transparent GlassIf glass condition (color,decoration, etc.) prohibits sufficient light transmission for useof Test Methods C148, anne

9、aling shall be qualified through theuse of the Scratch Test (Section 5). Containers tested inaccordance with the Scratch Test shall show no fractures. Thisperformance requirement will also apply to containers that arefurther processed (such as ceramic enamel decorations), fol-lowing the original man

10、ufacture, by re-heating the containerabove the strain point and cooling to room temperature.4.2 Thermal Shock:4.2.1 Containers shall not crack or break when tested, withthe water retained in the container from the first immersionthrough the second immersion, at a thermal shock temperaturedifferentia

11、l (T) of 50C (90F) during continuous productionin accordance with Test Method C149.4.2.2 Containers shall be tested at a thermal shock tempera-ture differential (T) of 50C (90F) during lot sampling inaccordance with Practice C224.5. Test Methods5.1 ScopeThis Scratch Test Method is designed to ensure

12、that residual stress is reduced to a commercially acceptablelevel in annealed soda-lime-silicate glass containers that areintended for use as candle containers. It provides an alternativemethod to Test Methods C148. Two methods of performing theScratch Test are covered:5.1.1 Test Method AScratch Tes

13、t using a tungsten carbidescribe, 5.4.2.1, and5.1.2 Test Method BScratch Test using fifty-grit emerypaper/cloth, 5.4.2.2.NOTE 1Independent test results showed no significant statisticaldifference between using tungsten carbide scribe and fifty-grit emerypaper/cloth.1This specification is under the j

United States15.2 Significance and UseThis test method can be used inthe quality control of soda-lime-silicate glass candlecontainers, where the degree of annealing must be verified toensure quality products. This procedure can be used whereglass cannot be rea

17、d by polariscope (color, decoration, etc.) oras an alternative method for transparent glass containers.5.3 SamplingMethods of sampling for a group of contain-ers of a given type are given in Practice C224 for annealing.5.4 Test Procedure:5.4.1 Allow the ware to cool evenly through the entirethicknes

18、s of the container to room temperature before usingeither Method A or B.NOTE 2Failure to cool the container completely may result in a falseresult.5.4.2 Scratch Procedure:5.4.2.1 Using Method AWith a tungsten carbide scribe,scratch once around the inside knuckle of the article. Thenscratch an “X” ac

19、ross the entire inside bottom surface of thearticle. All scratches are to be made using sufficient pressure topenetrate the surface of the glass.5.4.2.2 Using Method BWith fifty-grit emery paper/cloth,abrade the inside surface of each article using sufficient force topenetrate the surface of the gla

20、ss. Ensure that all sharp corners,dimples, indentations are abraded. A new piece of emerypaper/cloth is to be used for every piece tested.5.4.3 After using either method A or B, fill each article withwater at the same room temperature as the glass. Wait fifteenminutes, then empty the water and exami

21、ne each piece forfractures.5.5 ReportReport the number of fractures, if any for eachtest.5.6 Precision and BiasNo information is presented abouteither the precision or bias of the scratch test method since thetest result (fracture versus no fracture) is nonquantitative.6.
