、if satisfactory performance is to be obtained from the apparatus, that before any decision with regard to the buildings structure is taken there should be full consultation at the initial stages. All those concerned with the setting up and equipping of a gymnasium, assembly hall or sports hall (i.e.

、 the architect, the inspector, advisers on physical education, those responsible for the management and running of the gymnasium and the manufacturer supplying the fixed apparatus and floor coverings) should be consulted in order to obtain a properly co-ordinated arrangement of equipment and the nec

、essary strength of the main structure, especially when this equipment is permanently fixed in position. This is of particular importance with a building of frame construction having non-loadbearing panels or infilling. The unit spacing of the framing should, if possible, be related to the dimensions

、 of apparatus fixed to the walls. There should be no difficulty in arranging for fixtures and fittings appertaining to such apparatus to be placed in position by an apparatus manufacturer during the course of construction. Considerable attention should also be given to the positioning of any permane

、ntly projecting objects such as hooks, window mechanisms, switches, radiators and other heating devices, accidental contact with which could cause serious injury. The temperature and degree of humidity in a gymnasium or sports hall can sometimes affect apparatus constructed from timber and this shou

、ld be borne in mind when arranging contracts. Full consultation should take place with the manufacturers of the apparatus on any problems likely to arise from this source. Any apparatus used for swinging and similar exercises should be placed in such a position that contact by the user with any adja

、cent object which might cause injury is unlikely to take place. The lighting of the gymnasium both by artificial and natural light should be non-glare. The nature and type of floor should be adequate for the safe use of the apparatus concerned. A.2 Maintenance of gymnasium equipment It is important

、that all physical education apparatus is maintained in a first class, fully safe condition. General maintenance of the apparatus should take place regularly. An inspection should be carried out at least once per year by a competent person. In this way incipient defects attributable to wear and tear

、will be discussed and made good and the continued safety of the apparatus ensured. It is essential that inspection, repair and maintenance work should be carried out by specially qualified persons. Care should be taken that the type of finish used during maintenance repairs is compatible with the in

、itial finish. A certificate should be issued showing that the work has been carried out satisfactorily.BS1892-1:1986 BSI 04-2000 Publications referred to BS 302, Wire ropes for cranes, excavators and general engineering purposes.
