、. This British Standard has been prepared under the authority of the Mechanical Engineering Industry Standards Committee. The standard is complementary to BS1802, “Steel spring washers”, in that the phosphor bronze spring washers specified are also intended for general engineering purposes. The volu
、me of usage of phosphor bronze spring washers is of course considerably less than that of the steel variety, but there is a field in which their resistance to corrosion, their non-magnetic and other distinctive properties give them great advantages over other types. As in the allied specification, t
、he provisions of the standard are primarily dimensional. The quality of material to be used has been closely investigated in collaboration with the Coil Spring Federation Research Organization and the Cold Rolled Brass and Copper Association. The inclusion of the clause on the analysis of the materi

In accordance with BSI policy concerning the introduction of metric standards, this imperial standard has been declared obsolescent. It will be made obsolete in due course. A Brit

Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a fron

、British Standard relates to phosphor bronze spring washers of helical construction intended for general engineering application, and of the following types: a) Single coil square section. b) Single coil rectangular section. c) Double coil. Washers supplied in accordance with this specification shall
、 be for right hand threads unless otherwise specified by the purchaser. 2 Designation The washers shall be designated by the nominal diameters of the bolts with which they are used, as given in Column1 of Table 4, Table 5 and Table 6. Section 2. Material 3 Analysis Spring washers complying with the
、provisions of this British Standard shall be manufactured from phosphor bronze having the following chemical analysis: NOTEThis analysis is identical with that given in BS384, “Hard drawn phosphor bronze wire”. 4 Supply The material intended for the manufacture of phosphor bronze spring washers shal
、l normally be in the form of wire, supplied in coils, unless otherwise arranged between the purchaser and the supplier. 5 Limits of tolerance on dimensions of wire The wire for spring washers supplied in accordance with Clause4 above, shall be of square or rectangular section as required by the type
、 to be manufactured. The limits of tolerance on the width or thickness of the wire shall be those given in Table 1 which are taken from Table4 of BS1432. 1)Table 1 Tolerances on width and thickness 6 Freedom from defects The wire supplied in accordance with Clause4 above shall be sound, clean and sm
、ooth, free from kinks and from surface defects such as flaking, cracks, etc. 7 Hardness The minimum hardness value of the wire shall be200 on the diamond pyramid hardness scale, using a load of5 kg. 2)Alternatively, the equivalent hardness figure on other approved scales may be used. 3) 8 Dead wire
、test The wire supplied in accordance with Clause4 shall be flat in the coil with no corkscrew set when the coil is released. Section 3. Finished washers 9 Closing and test for permanent set a) Single coil washers. Sample washers shall be selected from batches in accordance with Table 2. The samples
、shall be completely closed; on release of the pressure the free height of each washer shall be not less than1.66 times its sectional thickness. This application and removal of pressure shall then be repeated twenty times in quick succession, after which the free height shall not have been further re

、e washer lies flat when closed under compression. 13 Finish Phosphor bronze spring washers complying with this British Standard shall have a self-colour finish. 14 Shape During use the washers shall remain circular and their section shall be such as not to cause them to spread when set down by a nut
、 under normal service conditions. NOTEThe dimensions given in Table 4 and Table 5 are based on the use of standard square and rectangular wire sections which, after coiling, produce washers of trapezoidal section, having the inner periphery thicker than the outer, but with the mean in accordance wit
