This edition of BS 2782 : Part 1 : Method 140D does n

、ot represent a technical revision but incorporates the amendments made to BS 2782 : Part 1 : Method 140D : 1980, which is withdrawn. Method 140D is one of a series of methods in BS 2782 that describe apparatus and procedures for determining the burning of plastics, for production control purposes. W

、ARNING. This British Standard method does not necessarily detail all precautions necessary to meet the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974. Attention should be paid to any appropriate safety precautions, and the method should be operated only by trained personnel. Compliance

、with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages 1 to 6, an inside back cover and a back cover. BSI 1997 1 BS 2782 : Method 140D : 1997 1) The ethanol previously use

、d as a reagent in this determination has been replaced for this purpose by industrial methylated spirits conforming to BS 3591. The requirement in respect of water content may conveniently be satisfied by the use of such industrial methylated spirits as a grade having a strength in accordance with B

、S 3591 of$ 99 % (V/V). It should be noted that the use of industrial methylated spirits is governed by The Methylated Spirits Regulations 1983 (S.I. 1983, No. 252). It is not permissible to use duty-free ethanol, received under the provisions of the Alcoholic Liquors Duties Act 1979, Section 10, for

、 purposes for which industrial methylated spirits is an acceptable alternative to ethanol. Method 1 Scope and field of application This method describes a procedure for determining the degree of flammability of a test piece (550 mm3 35 mm) of thin flexible polyvinyl chloride sheeting, for production

、 control purposes. 2 Principle A strip of material is stretched in the form of a semicircle over a suitable frame. One end of the strip is subjected to the flame from a small specified volume of burning alcohol. The test result is reported as the distance over which the strip has burned or charred u

、nder these conditions. 3 Apparatus and reagent The following apparatus and reagent are required. 3.1 Apparatus frame. Figure 1 shows a suitable form of the apparatus required. Figures 2 to 5 specify the essential dimensions of the apparatus, which shall consist of the following: a) Two parallel semi

、circular supports, each L-shaped in cross-section, curved to a radius of 178 mm, spaced apart at a distance suitable for supporting the test piece within the semicircular supports and standing on a base plate. The two supports shall be spaced so that their inner edges are (25 1.0) mm apart, by means

、 of wire spacers shaped as shown in figure 5. b) Two strips of spring steel, 4.8 mm wide and 0.13 mm thick, each of which is riveted at one end to a hinge, as shown in figure 3 (section of hinge). c) Thin steel cross-bar, to which the other ends of the two steel strips shall be connected, at the app

、ropriate distance apart. Means shall be provided for securing the cross-bar in position under spring tension during the test, as shown in figure 4. d) Metal platform, placed between the supports at the end where the flame is applied. The upper surface of the platform shall be 12.7 mm below the start

、 mark as shown in figure 3 (end elevation). e) Copper trough, of form and dimensions as shown in figure 5. f) Calibration; one of the semicircular supports shall be calibrated in 5 mm intervals from the start mark for a distance of 530 mm around its perimeter. The apparatus shall be used in an enclo

、sure free from draughts and constructed such that the progress of the test can be observed. Provision shall be made for ventilation at the end of each test to remove products of combustion. 3.2 Alcohol, comprising industrial methylated spirits (I.M.S), conforming to BS 3591 : 1985 and containing not

、 more than 1.5 % (m/m) of water, together with means to dispense a volume of (0.1 0.01) ml 1) . 4 Test pieces Use six test pieces, each 550 mm3 35 mm, cut from a sheet of the material under test. The thickness of the test pieces shall be the thickness of the sheet. Ensure the surfaces of the sheet a

、re clean and dry. If the faces of the sheet differ, test three test pieces with one face outwards and three with the opposite face outwards. 5 Conditioning No conditioning of the test pieces is required unless specified in the relevant material specification.2 BSI 1997 BS 2782 : Method 140D : 1997 6

、 Procedure Place the test piece in the channel formed by the two semicircular supports with one of its ends in line with the start mark. Draw over the steel strips and secure them by the springs provided, thus holding the test piece firmly along each inner edge of the semicircular supports with the

、wide centre position of the test piece in free air. Before each test is started, warm the copper trough by discharging (0.1 0.01) ml of alcohol (see 3.2) into the trough, igniting the alcohol with a very small flame and removing the igniting flame as soon as the alcohol is alight. When the alcohol h

、as burnt out, place the copper trough on the platform provided, centrally below the end of the test piece, discharge (0.1 0.01) ml of the alcohol into the trough, and immediately ignite it as previously so that ignition takes place (2.5 0.25) min after the instant of ignition of the first quantity.

、NOTE. The burning of the alcohol during each test will suffice to warm the trough in preparation for a subsequent test, provided that the time that elapses between successive ignitions is (2.5 0.25) min. After burning has ceased, note the distance from the start mark over which the test piece has bu

、rned. Where this distance is indefinite, fold the test piece along its length, and take the distance at which the charred front falls away as the distance of travel of the flame. 7 Test report The test report shall include the following particulars. a) At the head of the document the following state

、ment: The following test results relate only to the behaviour of the test pieces under the particular conditions of test; they are not intended, and shall not be used, as a means of assessing the potential fire hazard of the material in use. b) A complete identification of the material tested, inclu

、ding type, source, manufacturers code number, etc. c) The thickness, details of orientation and details of the face(s) of the test piece. d) A reference to this British Standard method, i.e. BS 2782 : Method 140D : 1996. e) Details of conditioning, if any. f) The distance of travel, in millimetres,
