This British Standard was first published in1957 under the authority of the Non-ferrous Metals Industry Standards Committee and at the request of the Aluminium I

It refers to strip used for electrical conductors such as windings for rotating electrical machines or transformers, and is suitable for controlling the quality of electrical purity aluminium strip supplied f

The three conditions previously covered have been retained but new designations have been introduced based on th

All stresses are quoted in terms of the hectobar (hbar) 1) . This standard is one of a series of standards for wrought aluminium and aluminium

BS2898, Wrought aluminium and aluminium alloys for electrical purposes. Bars, extruded round tube and sections. BS3988, Wrought aluminium for electrical purposes. Solid condu

As a major step towards alignment of aluminium and aluminium alloy compositions on an international basis, a substantial number of countries have agreed to adopt a4-digit classification for alloy composition designation. This system is administered by the Aluminum Associa

By amendment, it has been decided to introduce this system into the BritishStandards concerned with these types of material in place of the material designa

The temper designations and associated mechanical property requirements remain unaltered for the present and therefore may not necessarily align precisely with those in the standards of other countries. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover.iv blankBS2897:1970 BSI 11-1999 1 1 General requirements 1.1 Scope This British Standard specifies requirements for aluminium strip with drawn or rolled edges for electrical purp

24、oses, including chemical composition, mechanical properties, and electrical resistivity. It is applicable mainly to material of square or rectangular cross section with radiused corners. Such a material is normally available with a width/thickness ratio up to6. Strip with greater width/thickness rat

25、ios may be supplied by arrangement. Sizes greater than20mm in width may not be available in the H8 condition. 1.2 Freedom from defects The material shall be free from defects prejudicial to its use as an electrical conductor. 1.3 Joints There shall be no joints in the strip except those made in the

26、base rod or strip before final drawing or rolling. 1.4 Tolerances on dimensions Tolerances on width and thickness of strip shall be in accordance with Table 1. 1.5 Corner radius Unless otherwise specified by the purchaser, the corner radius of the strip shall be in accordance with Table 2. 1.6 Selec

27、tion of test samples Test samples for the tensile, elongation, bend and resistivity tests specified in 1.7, 1.8, 1.9 and1.10 shall be selected as follows. Strip of the same thickness, produced in the same way, and of the same condition, shall be grouped into batches not exceeding the weights given b

28、elow, and one test sample shall be cut from the strip selected from each batch, or any part of a batch remaining, to provide the necessary test pieces. Before the test samples are cut off they shall be marked to identify them. The test samples shall be taken from the strip as supplied and shall not

29、be annealed or mechanically worked other than by straightening or machining before testing. 1.7 Tensile test The test shall be made in accordance with BS18-1 2) . The load shall be applied gradually and uniformly. 1.8 Elongation test The test shall be made in accordance with BS18-1 2) . The load sha

30、ll be applied gradually and uniformly. Where possible the test piece shall be of the full cross section of the material with a gauge length of50mm. Alternatively it shall be of the full thickness of the material and machined to conform to the dimensions of the rectangular section test piece having a

31、 gauge length of50mm given in BS18-1 2) . The elongation shall be measured on the gauge length after the fractured ends have been fitted together. The determination shall be valid, whatever the position of the fracture, if the specified value is reached. If the specified value is not reached, the de

32、termination shall be valid only if the fracture occurs between the gauge marks and not closer than one third of the gauge length to either mark. 1.9 Bend test For material2.6mm and thinner the bend test piece shall be of the full cross section, and of convenient length. It shall be bent around a for

33、mer of the appropriate diameter (or closed flat) as specified in2.4.2. When the use of a former is impracticable, the test piece may be bent by hand to a U form, and closed in a vice. 1.10 Electrical resistivity test The resistivity shall be determined by direct measurement on the strip in accordanc

36、supplier. Test pieces for the retests shall be cut from these further samples. Should the test pieces from the two further samples satisfy the requirements of the mechanical and electrical resistivity tests, the batch represented by these samples shall be deemed to comply with the standard. Should t

37、he test pieces from either of the two samples fail, the batch represented shall be deemed not to comply with the standard. 1.12 Certificate of compliance The supplier shall, if required, certify that the material complies with the requirements of this standard. 1.13 Inspection If the purchaser wishe

38、s to inspect the material at the suppliers works he shall notify the supplier at the time of placing the order. 1.14 Independent test Should there be a dispute about the compliance of the material with regard to the composition or test requirements of this standard, the purchaser and the supplier sh

39、all have the right to have tests made by a mutually acceptable testing authority. The results obtained by the independent testing authority shall be accepted as final. If the material does not comply with the standard, the cost of independent testing shall be borne by the supplier; if the material c

The method of sampling for analysis shall be in accordance with BS1499 4) ; the methods of analysis shall be in accordance with BS1728 5) , where the appropriate method exists, and the method for determining resistivity shall be in
