It supersedes BS 3936 :

、 Part 9 : 1987, which is withdrawn. Daffodil and narcissi grown in the United Kingdom are measured traditionally on a long-slot riddle, but the Dutch usually grade theirs on a round riddle. A Dutch 12/14 size graded on a round riddle is similar to a UK 10/12 size graded on a long-slot riddle. This r

、evision of BS 3936 : Part 9 specifies the long-slot riddle sizes for these bulbs because the DNI, DNII, DNIII and Rocker sizes are no longer commonly used. It is assumed in the drafting of this British Standard that the execution of its provisions is entrusted to appropriately qualified and experien

、ced people. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This documen

、t comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii, pages 1 to 6, an inside back cover and a back cover. BSI 1998 1 BS 3936-9 : 1998 Specification 1 Scope This Part of BS 3936 specifies requirements for minimum dimensions, quality and labelling of the bulbs, corms and tubers that are l

、isted in table 1. NOTE. Table 1 covers the main sector, but the list is not comprehensive and new species are coming on to the market continually. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this Part of BS 3936, the following definitions apply. 2.1 bulb Underground modified stem bearing a number of swollen f

、leshy leaf bases or scale leaves in which food is stored, the whole enclosing the next years bud. 2.2 corm Bulb-like but solid underground modified stem which replaces that of the previous year. 2.3 tuber Short, thick, usually underground, modified stem, in which food reserves are stored, and which

、usually has buds (eyes) from which new shoots or growth are produced. 2.4 round riddle Device for sizing bulbs by passing them through a hole that is a perfect circle and is measured by its circumference (i.e. the diameter3 p ). 2.5 long-slot riddle Device for sizing bulbs by passing them through a

、parallel slot that is measured by dividing the riddle size by p to give the gap in centimetres between the parallel slots. 3 Name Bulbs, corms, tubers and plants shall be true to name, i.e. consistent with the name under which they are described. 4 Dimensions 4.1 Minimum size The largest circumferen

、ce (or in some cases the largest diameter) of a plant when measured perpendicularly to the axis of the stem after the plant has been lifted and air-dried, shall be not less than that given in column 3 of table 1. Bulbs used for retail trade shall be capable of producing a flower in their first seaso

、n and the flower shall be in the bulb at the time of sale, except for those bulbs which do not initiate flowers until after replanting. NOTE. Bulbs which do not initiate flowers until after replanting include most bulbous iris, gladiolus and anemone. 4.2 Size classes Bulbs, corms, tubers and plants

、shall be described by size according to the classes listed in column 4 of table 1. NOTE 1. Sizes are expressed in the form 10/12 (for example), which means that a 10/12 bulb will ride over the 10 cm riddle but fall through the 12 cm riddle. Sizes of daffodils and narcissi shall be determined by mean

、s of a long-slot riddle with slots of appropriate size. Sizes of other bulbs shall be determined by means of a round riddle of appropriate size. NOTE 2. Any general name given in table 1 is to be interpreted as including the particular names that fall within it, unless they are separately listed. 5

、Condition When inspected visually, bulbs, corms, tubers and plants shall exhibit no pests or diseases. When inspected visually, bulbs, corms, tubers and plants shall not be shrivelled. NOTE 1. This is especially important in the case of lilies. If species have fleshy perennial anchorage and/or contr

、actile roots, these shall be attached, undamaged and unshrivelled, with the exception of the roots of narcissi. When inspected visually, bulbs, corms, tubers and plants shall be free from soil as far as practicable, and shall exhibit no damage that would adversely affect their growth. Except in the

、case of some species such as small snowdrops and bluebells, the condition of bulbs, corms, tubers and plants for retail sale shall be such that they will flower in the season after planting. NOTE 2. Outer coats (tunics), for example on tulips, should be substantially complete.2 BSI 1998 BS 3936-9 :

、1998 1) Marking BS 3936-9 : 1998 on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturers declaration of conformity, i.e. a claim by or on behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is solely the responsibility of the person making

、the claim. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third-party certification of conformity, which may also be desirable. 6 Information and labelling 6.1 The following information shall be documented for each lot: a) the botanical name, the genus, the species and the cultivar and, if appropriat

、e, the colour or the designation mixed; b) the number of bulbs/plants; c) the size class; d) any preparatory treatment that has been carried out (for example, pretreatment for Christmas flowering); e) the number and date of this British Standard, i.e. BS 3936-9 : 1998 1) ; f) any recommendation rega

、rding appropriate planting periods and any requirements for special conditions or cultivation, for example concerning: appropriate (approximate) planting month; hardiness; greenhouse conditions; very free drainage; forcing of prepared bulbs. 6.2 Each lot of the same kind shall be legibly identified

、by either: a) a label giving the information specified in 6.1; or b) a general statement giving the name of the plant and a reference to the document in which the information specified in 6.1 can be found. NOTE. In the case of bulbs, corms, tubers and plants on public display, it is sufficient if th

、is information is displayed at the point of sale. 6.3 The supplier shall give the country of origin on request if this is not the United Kingdom. NOTE 1. If wild-collected bulbs are replanted by bulb growers and grown on before sale, the country of origin is the last country in which the bulbs were

、grown. NOTE 2. This information may be included on the label or other means of identification. NOTE 3. All bulbs should be labelled in accordance with the guidelines established by the Fauna and Flora Preservation Society and the bulb trade in The Netherlands to indicate whether they are wild-collec
