9、 direction of the Packaging and Freight Containers Standards Committee. This Section is identical with the English text of ISO830-1981 “Freight containersTerminology” including Amendments1 and2 prepared by Technical Committee104, Freight containers, of the International Organization for Standardizat

10、ion (ISO). Terminology and conventions. The text of the international standard has been approved as suitable for publication as a British Standard without deviation. Some terminology and certain conventions are not identical with those used in British Standards; attention is drawn especially to the

11、following. The comma has been used as a decimal marker. In British Standards it is current practice to use a full point on the baseline as the decimal marker. Wherever the words “International Standard” appear, relating to this standard, they should be read as “British Standard”. Other British Stand

12、ards giving information on freight containers are BS5073 “Guide to stowage of goods in freight containers” and BS5237 “Specification for lifting twistlocks”. A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for thei

20、to facilitate the carriage of goods by one or more modes of transport, without intermediate reloading; c) fitted with devices permitting its ready handling, particularly its transfer from one mode of transport to another; d) so designed as to be easy to fill and empty; e) having an internal volume o

21、f1m 3 (35.3ft 3 ) or more. the term “freight container” includes neither vehicles nor conventional packing 3.2 ISO freight container freight container complying with all relevant ISO container standards in existence at the time of its manufacture 4 Container types 4.0 General 4.0.1 Classification Co

22、ntainer types (see Table 1) are grouped, and groups are sub-divided according to the following concepts: mode of transport, categories of cargo, and the physical characteristics of the container. Thus: a) It is assumed that containers are intended for use in any or all of the surface modes of transp

23、ort, i.e.road, rail and sea, unless otherwise stated. Only in the case of containers primarily intended for transport by air (air mode containers, see4.1.3) is any specific reference made to the mode of transport when classifying ISO types of containers. b) The main classification is made in terms o

24、f the type of cargo for which a container is primarily intended. General cargo containers (see4.1.1) include those containers which are not specifically or primarily intended for a particular category of cargo. This group is sub-divided according to type of structure and/or means of access for loadi

25、ng (packing) and emptying. Specific cargo containers (see4.1.2) include those for cargoes which are temperature sensitive, for liquids and gases, for dry solids in bulk and for particular categories such as automobiles (cars), or livestock. This group is subdivided according to the appropriate physi

26、cal attributes of the container such as ability to maintain a particular temperature under stated conditions, test pressures, etc. 4.0.2 Type codes Container type codes are given in ISO6346 The type code consists of two arabic numerals, the first of which indicates the category and the second of whi

27、ch indicates certain physical characteristics or other attributes. NOTE 1A summary of container types giving reference to the relevant clauses and sub-clauses is given in Table 1. NOTE 2Neither the summary, nor the definitions which follow it, is intended to constitute an exhaustive list of containe

28、r types. NOTE 3In clauses4.1.1, 4.1.2 and4.1.3, where a reference is given in square brackets after the name of a container type, this identifies the document in which the specification and testing requirements are given for the type of container in question. NOTE 4When type codes are quoted with de

30、ot intended for use in air mode transport and which is not primarily intended for the carriage of a particular category of cargo such as a cargo requiring temperature control, a liquid or gas cargo, dry solids in bulk or cargoes such as automobiles (cars) or livestock 4.1.1.1 general purpose contain

31、er see ISO1496/1 freight container, totally enclosed and weather-proof, having a rigid roof, rigid side walls, rigid end walls and a floor, having at least one of its end walls equipped with doors and intended to be suitable for the transport of cargo of the greatest possible variety the simplest fo

32、rm of this type of container is given the type code00 a general purpose container having an opening roof (see6.1.11.1) may be used for the same specific purpose as an open top container. Such a container is given type code03 4.1.1.2 specific purpose container this is a general term applicable to all

33、 general cargo containers having constructional features either for the “specific purpose” of facilitating packing and emptying other than by means of doors at one end of the container, or for other specific purposes such as ventilation the container types covered by this general term are those defi

34、ned in4.1.1.2.1 to4.1.1.2.4 inclusive 4.1.1.2.1 closed vented/ventilated container container similar to a general purpose container of the closed type but designed to allow air exchange between the interior of the container and the outside atmosphere 4.1.1.2.1.1 vented container container provided w

35、ith passive vents at the upper part of its cargo space vented containers have the following type codes: 10 for those having vents of a total cross-sectional area of less than25cm 2per metre of nominal length of containers; 11 for those having vents of a total crosssectional area of greater than or e

36、qual to25cm 2per metre of nominal length of containers. 4.1.1.2.1.2 ventilated container container provided with a ventilating system designed to accelerate and increase the natural convection of the atmosphere within the container as uniformly as possible ventilated containers have the following ty

37、pe codes: 13 for those provided with a non-mechanical ventilating system consisting of vents provided at both the lower and upper parts of their cargo space; 15 for those provided with a mechanical ventilating system located internally; 17 for those provided with a mechanical ventilating system loca

38、ted externally. NOTECross-sectional area is the smallest cross-section of area of the air passage between the outside and the inside. 4.1.1.2.2 open top container see ISO1496/1 freight container similar in all respects to a general purpose container except that it has no rigid roof but may have a fl

39、exible and movable or removable cover, for example one made of canvas or plastic or reinforced plastic material normally supported on movable or removable roof bows such containers may have movable or removable top end transverse members above their end doors the simplest form of this type of contai

41、rstructure see ISO1496/6 c) platform-based container, having a permanently fixed longitudinal load-carrying structure between ends at the top NOTEThe term “load” as used refers to a static/dynamic type load, not a cargo load. containers of this type have the following type codes: 65 for those having
