9、s requirements for a range of polypropylene film cords, lines and twines for both Government and commercial purposes, and covers cords formerly included in Specification DEF-STAN40-10 1, which is to be withdrawn. 13、nes, excluding agricultural and fishing net twines, manufactured from polypropylene film, and gives methods of test for verification of these requirements. 16、nside back cover, but reference should be made to the latest editions. 3 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard, the definitions given in BS3724:1991 apply, together with the following. 3.1 fibrillateable film a polypropylene polymer or copolymer film into which such a degree of molec
17、ular orientation has been induced that it will split longitudinally when twisted 3.2 fibrillateable film tape a narrow strip of fibrillateable film 3.3 fibrillated film twine one or more fibrillateable film tapes split longitudinally by twisting to form a cord, line or twine 3.4 batch a definite qua
18、ntity of some commodity produced under presumed uniform conditions 3.5 package the unit of packaging in which cords, lines or twines are supplied NOTEThe packagemay be a ball or spool. 4 Materials 4.1 Cords, lines and twines shall be manufactured from fibrillateable film tape of polypropylene in acc
19、ordance with BS5139:1991. Virgin materials shall be used. NOTEA quantity of suitable additives, not exceeding10%, may be heat-combined in the melt to improve the mechanical properties of the finished twine for specific applications. 4.2 If stabilization is considered necessary in the use to which th
20、e twine is to be put, twine produced in accordance withTable 1shall contain inhibitor such that the twine has a percentage retained strength of not less than0.7times the percentage strength of the control, when tested in accordance with clause21 of BS5053:1985. NOTEPolypropylene is degraded by ultra
21、violet radiation, when exposed to sunlight, resulting in a progressive loss of mechanical performance. The vulnerability to degradation exists to a greater degree in cords, lines and twines made from an uninhibited polymer. Table 1 Single ply polypropylene film twines 4.3 For cords, lines and twines

NOTEThe
24、 direction of twist is at the discretion of the manufacturer, and the twine should be uniformly twisted and free from defect. 5.2 Three ply polypropylene film lines and cords shall conform toTable 2 and be of Z twist, with the exception of the8mm diameter line, which shall be composed of eight plait
25、s. Each ply, or plait, shall consist of an equal number of yarns. 5.3 Twines of minimum two ply shall conform toTable 3 and be of Z twist, and suitable for hand-sewing. Each ply shall be twisted before forming into the finished twine. 5.4 Finished cords, lines and twines shall be continuous througho
26、ut their length. NOTEThey should be flexible, well laid and free from defects likely to affect performance. 6 Make-up 6.1 Each package shall run continuously throughout its length. NOTEEach package should be neatly and securely made up. 6.2 When twines conforming toTable 1 are made up into balls, su
27、ch balls shall not be waisted unless specifically ordered so. 6.3 Cords and lines conforming toTable 2 shall be made up in220m coils or cheeses. 6.4 Twines conforming toTable 3 shall be made up in either250g or500g balls, cheeses, cops or spools. NOTEIt is recommended that the purchaser is requested
28、 to specify the make-up at the time of ordering. 7 Sampling and conditioning 7.1 Sampling The batch shall be constituted of the same type and dimensions of cord, line or twine. The number and length of the samples to be taken from each batch shall be in accordance with clause3 of BS5053:1985. NOTESa
29、mpling should be representative as possible of the batch. 7.2 Conditioning Conditioning of samples shall be in accordance with clause4 of BS5053:1985 except that samples shall be conditioned for24h. 8 Testing Runnage shall be determined in accordance with clause5 of BS5053:1985. Minimum breaking str
30、ength shall be determined in accordance with section three of BS5053:1985. For minimum breaking strength,10specimens per sample shall be tested. If the mean of the breaking forces of the10specimens is less than the appropriate minimum specified inTable 1 to Table 3, three further samples shall be ta
31、ken from the same batch and five specimens shall be tested from each of these samples. If the mean of the breaking forces for any of the three sets of five specimens is less than the appropriate minimum specified inTable 1 toTable 3, the whole batch shall be rejected. 34、 description of the cord, line or twine including its length; c) the name, trademark or other means of identification of the manufacturer. NOTEFor MOD contracts, additional information will be required (seeAnnex A). 1) Marking BS4881:1993 on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturers dec
35、laration of conformity, i.e. a claim by or on behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is solely the claimants responsibility. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third party certification of conformity, which may also be

37、is to have a label, securely attached, on which the following is clearly, legibly, and indelibly marked: a) the name, trademark or other means of identification of the manufacturer; b) the description of the cord, line or twine; c) the length of the twine, or the mass of the spool; d) the contract a
38、nd batch numbers; e) the NATO stock number; f) the year of manufacture; g) the number and date of this standard, i.e.BS4881:1993. A.3 Packing Packing is to be in accordance with the instructions issued with the contract or, if not defined in the contract, undertaken in a manner such that delivery is
