、mm spools for normal use on projectors are dealt with in BS5550-2.9.1 and BS5550-2.9.2 “Spools for16mm motion-picture projectors.” This present standard relates to a spool of larger capacity and more robust construction than the usual projector spool, and is intended for use on television or other s
、pecialized16mm film equipment. The dimensions adopted for the outside diameter and the core diameter of the spool are such as to accommodate the nominal length of film whether black and white, colour, or coated or striped for magnetic sound reproduction. The spindle mounting and drive are dimensiona
、lly identical with those specified in BS5550-2.9.2 for normal projector spools, but the clamping face is of larger diameter. As in BS2014, care has been taken to avoid any unnecessary restriction to freedom of design, and provision has been made for the required strength in establishing the dimensio
、ns of the spools. NOTEWhere metric equivalents are stated the figures in British units are to be regarded as the standard. The metric conversions are approximate. More accurate conversions should be based on the tables in BS350, “Conversion factors and tables”. All British Standards on cinematograph

、550-2.9.3:1980 BSI 11-1999 1 1 Scope This British Standard prescribes the requirements for spools for16mm cinematograph film of2400ft capacity. 2 General construction The flanges shall be of such design and be made of such material as not to crack nor to take a permanent set under normal conditions
、of use, and the bore shall be capable of withstanding the expected degree of wear. The hub may be of either solid or hollow construction, but shall be so designed as to provide for: a) the spindle mounting and drive specified in Clause4, b) a method of film attachment complying with Clause6, and c)
、the finger holes specified in Clause7. The flanges shall be firmly and rigidly attached to the hub, so that they will not come apart under normal conditions of use. They shall be so designed as to provide the flat clamping faces specified in Clause5. The flanges may be ribbed, but such ribbing shall
、 be so designed that there is no continuous concentric groove which would permit a layer of film to move laterally. Ribbing shall not encroach on the clamping face, and the width over the ribbing and over any rolled edge at the periphery of the flange shall not exceed the overall width specified in
、Table 1. All parts of the spool shall be free from sharp edges. 3 Dimensions The spool shall conform to the dimensions given in Clauses4, 5, 7 and8 and Table 1. 4 Spindle mounting and drive Each flange (or the entire hub, if of solid construction) shall have a square hole and driving slot conforming
、 to the dimensions given in Figure 2. If the hub is not solid, there shall be an insert so that the driving force is exerted over the full width of the spool and not solely on the flanges. It shall be possible for a square test bar of side0.3155inch(+00.0005) to be passed completely through the bore
、 of the spool. The driving slots in the two flanges shall be aligned to each other. 5 Clamping face Each flange shall have at its centre a clamping face which shall be free from any projection and shall have a minimum diameter of2 3 / 4 in. 6 Film attachment Effective provision shall be made for sec
、uring the end of the film, of such a nature as to accept the full width of the film, and such that the film will be freely released at the end of its run. The flanges shall be provided with access holes to furnish comfortable access for securing the film. 7 Finger holes and lightening holes In each
、flange there shall be at least four finger holes of not less than 3 / 4in diameter at a radial distance of from1 1 / 4in to1 1 / 2in from the centre of the spool. The shape of the finger holes or slots shall be at the discretion of the manufacturer, and one pair of holes may be so shaped as to serve
、 as the access holes required by Clause6. The flanges may be provided with such lightening holes as the manufacturer may desire. 8 Lateral run-out The flanges shall be free from warping or buckling. Each finished spool shall be tested for true running by being mounted on a true spindle fitted with a
、 truly normal clamping face,2 1 / 2 inches in diameter,to which the spool is clamped as in service. The spindle shall be square, of0.3155inch(+00.0005) width across flats. When the mounted and clamped spool is rotated, each flange at its periphery shall run true, in a plane perpendicular to the axis
、 of the spindle, to within a maximum dial indicator reading of 1 / 8in. 9 Finish The spool shall be proof against corrosion under normal conditions of use, and any finish shall not be detrimental to the film. 10 Running balance The finished spool shall provide a satisfactory running-balance. 11 Weig
、ht The finished spool shall not exceed45ounces in weight.
