、prepared under the direction of the Packaging and Freight Containers Standards Committee at the request of the Institute of Grocery Distribution and manufacturers of cage pallets used in the retail trades. Such cage pallets were developed to meet requirements for goods to be loaded for distribution
、to retail outlets where the goods could be put on sale without further unpacking or handling. This standard has been prepared both to ensure that the design and performance of a cage pallet are appropriate to its rating and conditions of use and to establish a set of dimensions related to interstack
、ing which will enable all cage pallets that meet the requirements of this standard to satisfactorily interstack one with another, whatever their source of manufacture. The plan size specified is based on the half Euro-pallet and is currently used throughout the retail trade. Guidance on the safe han

、is standard 2.9 rating the maximum safe working load for an individual cage pallet, i.e.300kg, assuming the load to be uniformly distributed over the base area of the cage pallet 3 Design and construction 3.1 Fork entry. The cage pallet shall permit the entry of forks of fork lift trucks from front,
、 back and sides. To ensure this, the height of the feet and the distances between them shall conform to the dimensions shown inFigure 2(a) andFigure 2(b). The construction of the cage pallet base shall be such that there is no obstruction to that access. The surfaces of the cage pallet which bear on
、 the forks shall be level and so constructed that the load may be safely carried on forks inserted to a distance of only75% of the width or length of the cage pallet. 3.2 Interstacking 3.2.1 General. The cage pallet shall be so designed that it may be interstacked in either the erected or the collap
、sed condition, by the use of interstacking devices, i.e. side-frame spigots, middle spigots and feet apertures. 3.2.2 Side-frame spigots. The cage pallet shall have four side-frame spigots so positioned that they locate in16mm diameter apertures with centres spaced at the points X as shown in the pl

The cage pallet shall be so designed that, in the erected condition, with one or more erected cage pallets stacked upon it, neither front, back nor sides can be collapsed (other than access gates within the front or side panels). 3.4 Access gates. The cage pallet
、shall have an access gate in the front for the loading and unloading of merchandise. A further access gate may be provided in one side. When secured in the open position all access gates shall hang downwards, but shall not touch the floor. 3.5 Catches and hinges. The design of catches and hinges sha
、ll be such as to prevent accidental opening due to gravity when the pallet is in the inverted position. 3.6 Snags and projections. The construction of the cage pallet shall be such that, as far as reasonably practicable, there are no sharp projections which could snag or damage the merchandise or ca
、use injury to persons or property. 3.7 Manufacturers shall make available such instructions on the assembly, erection and collapsing of cage pallets and the securing of gates and catches as may be necessary for their safe use. 4 Dimensions 4.1 The cage pallets shall comply with the dimensional requi
、rements and tolerances shown inFigure 2 andFigure 3. NOTEThe overall external plan dimensions include feet protrusions but projections such as bolt guards should be ignored. 4.2 The width of any aperture, other than openings for access gates, shall not be more than30mm in the base nor more than50mm
、in the front, back and side panels. 5 Rating Cage pallets shall be designed for a rating of300kg. Cage pallets meeting the requirements specified in6.2.1, 6.2.2, 6.2.3 and6.2.4 are deemed to satisfy the requirement. 6 Performance requirements 6.1 General. Cage pallet performance shall be assessed by
、 means of a sequence of type tests to be carried out in respect of each cage pallet type. Three cage pallets of each type shall be tested after preparation in accordance with clause7. NOTEThe tests are designed to reproduce the effects of the service conditions to which cage pallets will be subjecte
、d (seeAppendix A). 6.2 Criteria 6.2.1 General. The tests shall be carried out according to the sequence and conditions laid down inTable 1, using the test methods set out inAppendix B toAppendix G. 6.2.2 Dimensions. Before commencement and on completion of the test sequence, all three cage pallets s
、hall comply with the dimensional requirements set out in clause4, except that the external length and width may increase to880mm and625mm, respectively, when checked on completion. 6.2.3 Construction. On completion of the test sequence each cage pallet shall comply with the constructional requiremen
、ts set out in clause3 and there shall be no rupture of any component or joint. 6.2.4 Gates, catches and hinges. When checked as required by the test sequence all gates, catches and hinges shall operate effectively. During and on completion of any test for which gates and catches are secured in the c
、losed position, they shall remain closed. 6.2.5 Interstacking. When checked as required by the test sequence, by testing in accordance with the method set out inAppendix B, the interstacking devices of each cage pallet shall comply with the requirements set out in3.2.2, 3.2.3 and3.2.4. In addition,
、when the erected cage pallet is measured in accordance withB.2.1.4 the following conditions shall be satisfied. a) The vertical distance V between the top board and baseboard shall not be more than705mm nor less than685mm. b) The horizontal displacement of the top board relative to the baseboard sha
、ll not be more than50mm in either the length direction X or width direction Y. 6.3 Stacking. When erected and loaded to the rating specified in clause5, cage pallets shall be capable of being interstacked: a) up to five pallets high in storage or on display; b) up to two pallets high on a fork lift
、truck; c) up to three pallets high in transit on a vehicle. Cage pallets complying with the requirements of6.2.2, 6.2.3, 6.2.4 and6.2.5 when tested in accordance with the sequence and conditions set out inTable 1 shall be deemed to possess this stacking capability.BS6407-1:1983 4 BSI 12-1999 Figure
