6、I 12-1999 1 1 Scope This Section describes a method for the detection of cottonseed oil in vegetable oils. 2 Principle The fat is reacted with a solution of sulphur in carbon disulphide in the presence of amyl alcohol. The presence of cottonseed oil is detected by visual examination of the colour de
7、veloped. 3 Reagents The following reagents are required (seealsoBS684: General introduction). 3.1 Amyl alcohol 3.2 Precipitated sulphur solution. Dissolve1g of precipitated sulphur in100ml of carbon disulphide. WARNING. Extreme care should be taken in handling carbon disulphide owing to its high fla
8、mmability and low ignition temperature. 4 Apparatus The following item of apparatus is required (see also BS684: General introduction). 4.1 Glass tube,15ml minimum capacity, heavy gauge, closed at one end and provided with a secure seal. Alternatively a screw top bottle of similar capacity may be us
9、ed. 5 Sampling and preparation of the sample for analysis See BS684: General introduction. 6 Procedure Mix in the glass tube(4.1)2.5ml of the fat with2.5ml of a mixture of equal volumes of the amyl alcohol(3.1) and the precipitated sulphur solution(3.2). Close the tube securely and immerse it to one
10、 third of its depth in boiling water. A reddish colour will develop in30min if cottonseed oil is present. NOTEKapok oil will give a similar reddish colour, and other oils containing cyclopropene acids and fats from animals fed on cottonseed products may also give a similar colour. Heat-treated or hy
11、drogenated cottonseed oils will give either a diminished colour, or no colour. The depth of the colour developed cannot therefore be taken as a measure of the percentage of cottonseed oil in a mixture. 7 Test report See the general instructions and recommendations given in BS684: General introductio
