、erational duties and in training. They are also used by civilians engaged in activities where the risks of attack and assault are similar, e.g. private security personnel, bullion handlers, escorts and couriers. These gloves are intended to reduce the risk of injury from edged weapons. The test meth

、ods specified in this part of BS 7971 have been designed to measure the performance of gloves with respect to the protection they can be expected to provide against this hazard. However, these tests do not necessarily compare with the conditions to which police officers, prison officers and other us

、ers can be exposed in real life situations, where the mechanical hazards encountered might be different. 1 Scope This part of BS 7971 specifies performance requirements and test methods for slash resistant gloves for use by police and prison officers and others who might be exposed to attack and ass

、ault in the course of their duties, for use in operational situations and in training. NOTE 1 Information and guidance on the use of these gloves is given in Annex A. NOTE 2 Guidance on risk assessment and the selection, care and maintenance of protective clothing and equipment for use in violent si

、tuations and in training is given in BS 7971-2. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. 22、es shall be of a single type which shall be performance level 2, as specified in BS 7971-1. 4 Construction and performance requirements 4.1 General Slash resistant gloves shall conform to BS EN 420 and to the general requirements for protective clothing and equipment for use in violent situations an

、d in training specified in BS 7971-1, as applicable. 4.2 Construction With the exception of any specially reinforced areas, gloves shall be of uniform construction over the whole surface. NOTE Specially reinforced areas may be included along the index finger, at the base of the thumb and on the back

、 of the glove. 4.3 Sizing Sizing of gloves shall be in accordance with BS EN 420. 4.4 Ergonomic performance and compatibility When tested in accordance with BS 7971-1, the gloves shall have a test score equal to or less than 5. 4.5 Abrasion resistance When material from the palm of the glove is test

、ed in accordance with BS EN 388:1994, 6.1, it shall be at least performance level 2 as specified in BS EN 388:1994, Table 1 (i.e. no breakthrough after 500 cycles).BS 7971-7:2003 2 BSI 22 April 2003 4.6 Blade cut resistance When material from the palm of the glove and from the back of the glove is t

、ested in accordance with BS EN 388:1994, 6.2, it shall be at least performance level 5 as specified in BS EN 388:1994, Table 1 (i.e. a blade cut resistance index of 20.0). 4.7 Tear resistance When material from the palm of the glove is tested in accordance with BS EN 388:1994, 6.3, it shall be at le

、ast performance level 3 as specified in BS EN 388:1994, Table 1 (i.e. resistant to a tearing force of 50 N). 4.8 Puncture resistance When material from the palm of the glove is tested in accordance with BS EN 388:1994, 6.4, it shall be at least performance level 2 as specified in BS EN 388:1994, Tab

、le 1 (i.e. resistant to a puncture force of 60 N). 5 Test specimens, and conditioning and testing conditions 5.1 Test specimens Test specimens for the tests to be carried out on glove materials shall be either: a) cut from one or more gloves; or b) specially constructed using identical materials and

、 construction techniques to those used in making the gloves. For gloves with a multilayer construction, the test specimens shall include all the layers, even if, after the test specimen has been cut, the layers are no longer connected to one another. Test specimens shall exclude any specially reinfo

、rced areas of the glove. At least one whole glove shall be submitted with each set of test specimens, for checking conformity to 4.2. 5.2 Conditioning Before testing, the test specimens shall be conditioned in accordance with BS EN 388:1994, 5.3. Either the tests shall be carried out in the conditio

、ning atmosphere or, if the tests are carried out in an atmosphere different to the conditioning atmosphere, the tests shall be commenced within 5 min of the test specimens being removed from the conditioning environment and shall be completed within 15 min.BS 7971-7:2003 BSI 22 April 2003 3 Annex A

、(informative) Information and guidance on the use of slash resistant gloves The gloves specified in this part of BS 7971 are intended to protect against slash injuries from edged weapons and glass. These gloves are intended to enable operatives to use all the other protective clothing and equipment

、designed for use in violent situations and in training (e.g. personal defence shields) without removing their gloves. The provision of such dexterity necessitates limitation of the stiffness and thickness of the gloves, and thus limits the protection that can be provided. WARNINGS: Users should ensu

、re that the gloves are compatible with their chosen defence equipment such as batons, incapacitant sprays and handcuffs. The gloves cannot be expected necessarily to protect against stabs and perforations inflicted in direct blows from, for example, sharp knives, spikes or needles, or against injury

、 by chain saws or samurai swords. The gloves cannot be expected to protect against direct blows by, for example, bricks, bottles, bars, slates or hand held weapons such as metal or wooden bars, bats or poles. The gloves might not protect against burns by burning liquids, flames or hot objects. The g

、loves cannot be expected to protect against injury from contact with chemicals or biological agents.4 blankBS 7971-7:2003 BSI 22 April 2003 5 Bibliography Standards publications BS 7971-2:2003, Protective clothing and equipment for use in violent situations and in training Part 2: Guidance on risk a
