、on of BS 984: 1976, which is withdrawn. The present revision has been produced in response to Statutory Instrument: 1986 No. 2049 The Weights and Measures (Packaged Goods) Regulations, 1986, which calls up certain clauses of the 1976 edition of this standard. The Weights and Measures Act 1979, now P

、art V of the Weights and Measures Act 1985, introduced provisions for the metrological control of packaged goods including knitting yarn and rug yarn. The law is part of a process of aligning technical laws in all member states of the European Community with the objective of making trade easier. For

、 the purpose of Part V of the 1985 Act a package is a combination of a container and goods placed into it otherwise than in the presence of the purchaser and from which the contents cannot be removed without breaking open the container. Knitting and rug yarn made up in ball, skein or hank form are a

、lso included within the scope of the legislation as open packs, e.g. knitting yarns or rug yarns confined within a band or having a label attached. Rug yarn in cut pack form and knitting and rug yarns which will be used in trade processes or treatments are exempted. The specific responsibility for c

、ontrolling the mass of knitting and rug yarn subject to the Weights and Measures Act 1985 now lies with the person who makes up the yarn into packages or the person who imports yarn in packages. Those clauses of BS 984 : 1976 referred to in S.I. 1986 No. 2049 have been expanded in this edition of th

、e standard, to include in full those subjects formerly covered by reference only to BS 4784 : 1973, which has been withdrawn. The method for determination of the dry mass of a sample of packages is now given in appendix A. Other provisions in Part V of the Weights and Measures Act 1985, for the cont

、rol of knitting and rug yarn, are the subject of the Code of Practical Guidance for Hand Knitting and Rug Yarn, issued by the British Hand Knitting Association Limited and which has been approved by the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. This code gives one way to carry out duties set out in

、 the Act. NOTE. Manufacturers may claim that the declared net mass of a package in grams has been determined in accordance with BS 984, and include this on the package. Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. In particular attention is drawn to t

、he Weights and Measures (Packaged Goods) Regulations 1986, the Weights and Measures (Marking of Goods and Abbreviations of Units) Regulations 1975 and amendments, the Textile Product (Indications of Fibre Content) Regulations 1986; and the Weights and Measures (Knitting Yarns) Order 1988. 20、 Issue 2, March 1998 BS 984 : 1990 Method | | | 1 Scope This British Standard describes procedures for determining and calculating package masses of knitting and rug yarns, which are intended for retail sale. NOTE. The titles of the publications referred to in this standard are listed on the inside

、back cover. 2 Definitions For the purposes of this British Standard, the following definitions apply. 2.1 net mass The oven-dry mass of a package, adjusted by the appropriate allowance for moisture. 2.2 package The minimum individual unit in which the yarn is offered for sale, e.g. the ball. It excl

、udes any container, confining band or label. 2.3 sample The part of a group or batch of packages randomly selected for the purpose of the test. 3 Allowances for moisture NOTE. Attention is drawn to the allowances for moisture which are those set out in Schedule 3 to Statutory Instrument: 1986, No. 2

、6 The Textile Products (Indications of Fibre Content) Regulations, 1986 and in Statutory Instrument : 1988, No. 1350 The Textile Products (Indications of Fibre Content) (Amendment) Regulations, 1988. These give values for a complete range of fibres. In this standard they are applied to dry fibres on

、ly. For material consisting of blends of one or more different fibre types, calculate the allowance for moisture on a proportional basis from the dry masses of the constituents and their respective allowances using the formula: % 2 100 100 + + + . M 1 100 + r 1 M 2 100 + r 2 M 3 100 + r 3 where M 1

、, M 2 , M 3 are declared mass percentages of each component, and r 1 , r 2 , r 3 are the respective allowances for moisture of the components. Example A blend of yarn declared to contain 80 % wool and 20 % acrylic fibre will have an allowance for moisture of 14.60 % calculated as follows: 80 % wool

、/ 20 % acrylic: allowance for moisture = =% 2 100 100 1 80 118.25 20 102.00 = 2 100 % 100 0.676 53 + 0.196 08 =% 2 100 100 0.872 61 = (114.602 100) % = 14.60 % 4 Determination of net mass of packages 4.1 Determine the oven dry mass of each package in the sample in accordance with the method given in

、 appendix A. 4.2 Calculate the net mass of each package using the formula: net mass (in g) of a package = C3 100 + r 100 where C is the oven-dry mass of a package (in g), and r is the appropriate allowance for moisture. 5 Test report The test report shall include the following information: a) the ne

、t mass of the package in grams; b) that the method used was in accordance with this British Standard, i.e. BS 984 : 1990; c) identification of the package.BS 984 : 1990 4 Appendix Appendix A. Method for the determination of the dry mass of a sample A.1 Principle The sample is dried and the oven dry

、mass of each package determined without removal of non-textile materials. The net mass is then calculated from the oven-dry mass plus the appropriate allowance for moisture as specified in clause 3. A.2 Apparatus A.2.1 Drying apparatus in which air at 105 38C can be positively circulated through the

、 package, and which is suitable for the size of package so that channelling of the airstream is avoided. Additionally, the apparatus shall be such that no localized overheating causing scorching, shrivelling or melting of the fibres takes place. A.2.2 A balance capable of detecting relative changes

、of 0.005 g on successive determinations of mass. A.3 Procedure Dry the sample to a constant mass at 105 38Ci na ventilated oven or other suitable apparatus designed for forced air drying. Determine the oven dry mass of each package in the sample in grams to an accuracy of 0.05 % by one of the follow

、ing means. a) If the oven or apparatus has a built-in balance, determine the mass of each package in the sample in the oven with the air flow stopped. The mass may be considered constant when successive determinations of mass at intervals of 20 min show no progressive change in the mass greater than

、 0.05 %. b) If the apparatus has no built-in balance, dry each package in the sample in a container with perforated ends, close the ends of the container immediately and allow it to cool. The mass may be considered constant as in (a). A.4 Test report Report the oven-dry mass of the sample in grams.B
