EN 60254-1:2005 - 2 - Foreword The text of document 21/619/FDIS, future edition 4 of IEC 60254-1, prepared by IEC TC 21, Secondary cells and batteries, was submitted to the IEC-CENELEC parallel vote and was approved by CENELEC as EN 60254-1 on 2005-05-01.

、This European Standard supersedes EN 60254-1:1997. The principal change is the removal of the original Clause 6 dealing with “Testing procedures for light road vehicle traction batteries“, as this is now covered by EN 61982-2. The “high rate discharge test“ has been changed from 0,5 h to 1 h and the

、 temperature coefficient of resistance for 1 h discharge included. The opportunity has also been taken to introduce relatively minor revisions where these are now more appropriate due to developments. The following dates were fixed: latest date by which the EN has to be implemented at national level

、 by publication of an identical national standard or by endorsement (dop) 2006-02-01 latest date by which the national standards conflicting with the EN have to be withdrawn (dow) 2008-05-01 Annex ZA has been added by CENELEC. _ Endorsement notice The text of the International Standard IEC 60254-1:2

Tests which may be used specifically to test batteries developed for use in vehicles such as light passenger vehicles, motor cycles, light commercial vehicles, etc. may be found

、 in alternative standards e.g. IEC 61982-2. The object of this standard is to specify certain essential characteristics of traction batteries or cells, together with the relevant test methods of those characteristics. Although Part 2 of this standard defines dimensions of commonly used traction cell

、ls and marking of polarity on cells Amendment 1 (2000) 3 Functional characteristics 3.1 Capacity (for the test, see 5.2) 3.1.1 The most essential characteristic of a traction battery is its ability to store electric energy. This is expressed as capacity C, measured in ampere hours (Ah), which varies

、 with the conditions of use. 3.1.2 The nominal capacity C Nis a reference value, declared by the manufacturer, which is valid for the cell/battery temperature of 30 C, a discharge time of 5 h, and a cut-off voltage U f = 1,70 V per cell. The corresponding discharge current is EN 60254-1:2005 6 I C N

、 N(A) = (Ah) 5 (h)3.1.3 The actual capacity C ashall be determined by discharging a fully-charged battery according to 5.2. The resultant value is used for the verification of the nominal capacity C N . 3.2 Charge retention (for the test, see 5.3) Batteries lose charge on open circuit as a result of

、 self-discharge. The charge retention is defined as the residual dischargeable capacity C rafter storage on open circuit under defined conditions of temperature and time. 3.3 High-rate discharge performance (for the test, see 5.4) In some applications, traction batteries shall be capable of supplyin

、g high-rate discharge currents: I I N(A) i.e. 1 h discharge rate, for instance for acceleration and/or lifting of loads. Since not all traction batteries are required to supply high current rates, this characteristic is only applied when appropriate. Because of the intermittent nature of the load th

、e high-rate performance of a traction battery is represented by the 1 h discharge current I 1 , i.e. the current to discharge a battery at 30 C to a cut-off voltage U f= 1,6 V per cell within 1 h. If required, the value of the current I 1shall be indicated by the manufacturer. 3.4 Cyclic endurance (

、for the test, see 5.5) The service provided by a traction battery consists of discharges followed by recharges, each discharge generally using a large part of the stored energy. The endurance of a battery is defined by the number of discharge/recharge cycles it can perform under specified conditions

、 until its capacity has just reached the limit of 0,8 C N . 4 General test conditions 4.1 Accuracy of measuring instruments (see IEC 60051) 4.1.1 Electrical measuring instruments 4.1.1.1 Range of measuring devices The instruments used shall enable the values of voltage and current to be measured. Th

、e range of these instruments and measuring methods shall be chosen so as to ensure the accuracy specified for each test. 7 EN 60254-1:2005 For analogue instruments, this implies that the readings shall be taken in the last third of the graduated scale. Any other measuring instruments may be used pro

、vided they give an equivalent accuracy. 4.1.1.2 Voltage measurement The instruments used for voltage measurement shall be voltmeters of an accuracy class equal to 0,5 or better. The resistance of the voltmeters used shall be at least 1 000 /V. 4.1.1.3 Current measurement The instruments used for cur

、rent measurement shall be ammeters of an accuracy class equal to 0,5 or better. The entire assembly of ammeter, shunt and leads shall be of an accuracy class of 0,5 or better. 4.1.2 Temperature measurement 4.1.2.1 Where the electrolyte is accessible, cell temperature shall be measured by use of a te

、mperature probe immersed in the electrolyte above the plates. The temperature measuring instrument shall have a suitable range in which the value of each graduated division is not in excess of 1 K. The absolute accuracy of the instrument shall be at least 1 K. 4.1.2.2 Where the electrolyte is not ac

、cessible, cell temperature shall be measured by use of a surface temperature measuring device capable of an equivalent scale definition and accuracy of calibration as specified in 4.1.2.1. The temperature should be measured at a location which most closely reflects the electrolyte temperature. 4.1.3

、 Electrolyte density measurement For measuring electrolyte densities, hydrometers shall be used with scales so graduated, that the value of each division is not in excess of 5 kg/m 3 . The absolute accuracy of the instrument shall be at least 5 kg/m 3 . 4.1.4 Time measurement The instruments used fo

、r measuring time shall have an accuracy of 1 % or better. NOTE Any instrument may be used on condition that the accuracy requirements of 4.1 are maintained. 4.2 Preparation and maintenance of the test cells or batteries 4.2.1 Cells or batteries shall be put into service in accordance with the manufa

、cturers instructions (e.g. in the activation of dry-charged batteries). All tests shall be carried out on unused, fully charged cells or batteries (see 4.3), within three months of manufacture. Where the cells to be tested have boxes with flexible walls, the cells should be suitably supported or cla

、mped to render and maintain the cell box walls flat during the entire tests. This is particularly relevant in the case of valve-regulated cells. EN 60254-1:2005 8 4.2.2 Where applicable, before testing, the density and level of the electrolyte in all cells shall be as specified by the manufacturer f

、or a fully charged battery, at the electrolyte reference temperature of 30 C. 4.2.3 Where applicable, during testing, the level of the electrolyte shall be maintained as specified by the manufacturer for a fully charged battery. 4.2.4 The purity of the topping-up water and of the electrolyte shall b

、e as specified by the manufacturer. 4.3 Characteristics of a fully charged cell or battery (unless the state of a fully charged battery is otherwise stated by the manufacturer) Cells or batteries are considered as fully charged when, during charging at a current/voltage value specified by the manufa

、cturer, the observed voltage/current and electrolyte density where accessible, do not show any appreciable change during a period of 2 h. Changes in temperature shall be taken into account. 5 Testing procedure 5.1 Sequence of performance of the tests 5.1.1 The tests for: 5 h capacity (see 5.2), char

、ge retention (see 5.3), 1 h high-rate discharge performance (see 5.4) may be carried out either on a new complete battery or on a representative part thereof in the order listed here. For acceptance or commissioning a 5 h capacity test or as agreed upon between battery supplier and battery user shal

、l be selected. The charge retention test and the high-rate discharge ability test are optional. 5.1.2 The test for endurance in cycles (see 5.5) is a destructive test and shall be executed on a minimum of three cells of the same type. Suitable packing should be provided for the test samples in order

、 to maintain the same dimensions as when installed in batteries. 5.2 Capacity test 5.2.1 To facilitate the temperature readings, one pilot cell is selected per group of six cells, the average of the pilot cells being considered as representative of the average temperature of the battery. The tempera

、ture of each pilot cell shall be read immediately prior to the discharge. The individual readings shall be between 15 C and 40 C. The average initial cell temperature t 0is calculated as the arithmetic mean of the individual values. 9 EN 60254-1:2005 5.2.2 The battery shall be completely charged in

、accordance with 4.3. 5.2.3 Within 1 h to 24 h after the end of charging, the battery shall be subjected to a discharge at the current I N(see 3.1.2). This current shall be maintained constant within 1 % throughout the whole discharge time. 5.2.4 The voltage across the terminals of the battery (exclu

、ding battery output cables), shall be either recorded automatically against time, or noted at suitable time intervals using a voltmeter (see 4.1.1.2). 5.2.5 The discharge is discontinued when the average voltage has reached the value of 1,70 V per cell. The discharge time shall be noted. 5.2.6 The uncorrected capacity C (Ah) at the initial temperature t 0 is calculated as the product of the discharge cur
