IEC1300-1:1995, Fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components Basic test and measurement procedures Part1: General and guidance. 2 General description The test should be performed in a laboratory shielded from external mag
、netic fields or where the ambient magnetic intensity and direction are known. As the direction of an external magnetic field is indeterminate with respect to the direction of a component in an actual system, it is essential to specify measurement procedures which can control both the intensity and d
、irection of the external magnetic field being exerted on the component. For the purpose of simplifying the illustration, this procedure only gives a measuring method for configuration A devices, i.e.devices containing integral fibre optic pigtails without connectors (asspecified in the generic speci
、fications). 3 Apparatus The apparatus consists of the following elements: 3.1 Source S This unit consists of an optical emitter, its fibre pigtail (if any), and associated drive electronics. It may include mechanical or electrical modulation of the optical power. It could, for example, be a laser or
、 a spectrally broadband source combined with an interference filter or monochromator. The precise characteristics shall be compatible with the measurement requirements, and shall be specified in the detail specification, including: power output; peak wavelength; spectral width; coherent or incoheren
、t; power output stability; pigtail fibre type (if any). 3.2 Excitation unit E This unit consists of a passive optical system which transmits the optical power to the component with the required launch conditions. Unless otherwise specified, the launch conditions shall be in accordance with annex B o
、f IEC1300-1. It shall be compatible with the component being measured, and shall be specified in the detail specification. 3.3 Detector D This unit consists of an optical detector, its fibre pigtail (if any), and associated detection electronics. The detector element, or the core of the fibre which
、is pigtailed to it, shall have a diameter and acceptance angle which is equal to or exceeds respectively the maximum core diameter and numerical aperture of the fibre on the component output. The precise characteristics shall be compatible with the measurement requirements, and shall be specified in
、 the detail specification, including: maximum sensitivity; linearity; peak and range of wavelength sensitivity; amount of power reflected; range of wavelength sensitivity; stability; pigtail fibre type (if any).EN61300-2-39:1997 4 BSI 09-1999 3.4 Temporary joint TJ This is a method, device, or mecha
、nical fixture fortemporarily aligning two fibre ends into a reproducible, low loss joint. It may, for example, beaprecision v-groove vacuum chuck, micromanipulator, or a fusion or mechanical splice. A suitable refractive index matching material shall preferably be used. The stability of the temporar
、y joint shall be compatible with the measurement precision required. 3.5 Fibre lengths L 1 , L 2 Where fibre lengths are indicated in the illustrations accompanying the test methods in this standard, these lengths shall be specified in the detail specification. 3.6 External magnetic field unit (M) w
、ith controller The dimension of the test area within the magnetic field unit shall be such that the presence of the device under test DUT does not modify the magnetic field and the test conditions. The external magnetic induction B in this area shall be a uniform distribution and be adjusted continu
、ally by the controller. The external magnetic induction shall be fixed at the level specified in the detail specification. The direction of the magnetic field can be changed, if applicable. Pigtail fibres shall conveniently pass in and out of the test area. A suitable clamping apparatus shall be use
、d to maintain the DUT securely in position during the test. 4 Procedure 4.1 Configure the test set-up as shown in Figure 1. 4.2 After ensuring the quality of the TJs and the stability of the system making and maintaining the external magnetic induction B=0, measure and record the power level, P 0 .
、4.3 Regulate the controller of the electromagnet to ensure the external magnetic induction, B, and its direction, F, are as specified in the detail specification. To minimize test error, the fibre ends at the TJ as well as those at the D shall not be displaced during the test. Measure and record the
、 power level P 1 (F). 4.4 Maintain a constant condition as in4.3 except that the direction of the external magnetic induction, B, is reversed (i.e.in direction R) by the controller. Measure and record power level P 1 (R). 4.5 The variation in attenuation caused by the external magnetic induction, B,
、 is given by the following formula: %a = a(F)a(R) When the external magnetic induction, B, is in the direction F, a(F) is given by: a(F)=10log (P 1 (F)/P 0 ) When the external magnetic induction, B, is in the direction R, a(R) is given by: a(R)=10log (P 1 (R)/P 0 ) Figure 1 Measurement set-upEN61300
