26、desirable,butthedegreeofconsumertoleranceforagivenlevelofpillingwilldepend onthegarmenttypeandfabricenduse. Generallythelevelofpillingwhichdevelopsisdeterminedbytheratesofthefollowingparallelprocesses: a)fibreentanglementleadingtopillformation; b) developmentofmoresurfacefibre; c) fibreandpillwear-o

Theratesoftheseprocessesdependonthefibre,yarnandfabricproperties.Examplesofextremesituationsare foundinfabricscontainingstrongfibresversusfabriccontainingweakfibres.Aconsequenceofthestrongfibreisa rateofpillformationthatexceedstherateofwear-off.Thisresultsinanincreaseofpillingwithanincreaseofwea

Withaweakfibretherateofpillformationcompeteswiththerateofwear-off.Thiswouldresultinafluctuationof pillingwithanincreaseofwear.Thereareotherconstructionsthatthesurfacefibrewear-offoccursbeforepill formation.Eachoftheseexamplesdemonstratesthecomplexityofevaluatingthesurfacechangeondifferent typesof

Thetestapparatusconsistsofabaseplatecarryingthepillingtablesanddrivemechanism.Thedrivemechanism consistsoftwoouterdrivesandaninnerdrivewhichcausethespecimenhol

39、derguideplatetotraceaLissajous figure. Thespecimenholderguideplateismovedhorizontallybythedrivemechanisminsuchawaythateverypointof theguideplatedescribesthesameLissajousfigure. TheLissajousmovementchangesfromacircletograduallynarrowingellipses,untilitbecomesastraightline,from whichprogressivelywiden

40、ingellipsesdevelopinadiagonallyoppositedirectionbeforethepatternisrepeated. Thespecimenholderguideplateisfittedwithbearinghousingsandlowfrictionbearingswhichcarrythespecimen holderguidespindles.Thelowerendofeachspecimenholderspindleisinsertedintoeachcorresponding specimenholderbody.Thespecimenholder
