The general requir

The standard has been prepared to supersede those remaining requirements in BS G100:1952 relating to rotating machines: its requirements will not be applied retrospec

Machines designed prior to the implementation of this standard will be used for some time, and consideration will need to be given to the matching-up of new machines with old systems and vice versa. The standard makes reference to the following BritishStandards: BS F67, Hose for aviation fue

Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity from legal obligations. Summary of pages This document comprises a fr

、ont cover, an inside front cover, pagesi andii, pages1 to4 and a back cover. This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the inside front cover. 1) Various parts and sections of BS2G100 are being progr

、essively revised, renumbered and published as parts or sections of3G100. Refer to BS3G100-0, “Introduction”, for greater information. 2) In course of preparation.BSG102:1971 BSI 02-2000 1 1 Scope This BritishStandard specifies the requirements which are generally applicable to rotating electrical ma

、chines for aircraft, and additional to the requirements in the relevant parts of BS3G100 (seefootnote to Foreword). 2 Definitions For the purposes of this BritishStandard the definitions contained in the following BritishStandards apply: 1) BS292 in relation to bearings (Clause3). 2) BS3851 in relat

、ion to rotor balancing (Clause5). 3) BS4362, SectionA1, in relation to brushgear (Clause6). 3 Bearings 3.1 Bearings and methods of lubrication shall be selected and applied in such a manner as consistently to conform to the declarations in regard to life required by BS3G100-1. NOTEThe dangers of exc

、ess lubrication or lack of lubrication should be stressed in the relevant maintenance instructions. 3.2 The design of the bearing arrangements shall be such that the bearings cannot be deleteriously affected by foreign matter such as brush dust, etc. It should be noted that most types of rubbing oil

、 seal must be prevented from running dry. 3.3 Allowance shall be made for differential expansion in the machine. 3.4 Spinning of the bearings in their housing shall be prevented, but slight rotational creep may be admissible provided it has no deleterious affect. 3.5 Ball and roller bearings shall b

、e so selected that under all operational conditions there is a radial internal clearance within the bearing. NOTEGuidance on the selection of appropriate clearance limits is given in Ministry of Aviation Supply Technical Note EL.165 3) , “Code of Practice for using ball and roller bearings on electr

、ical machines”. 4 Lubrication 4.1 Provision shall be made for preventing the undue loss of the grease contained in grease-lubricated bearings. 4.2 The quantity, type and method of lubrication of fluid-lubricated bearings shall be as required by the individual specification. It shall be the responsib

、ility of the designers of the machine to safeguard the machine against the possible injurious effects of oil ingress. 4.3 When a splined shaft attachment complying with BS M32 is used, the lubrication requirement in that specification shall be complied with. 4.4 When a splined or serrated shaft atta

、chment not complying with BS M32 is used, adequate lubrication of the spline surface shall be provided. The designers of the driving and driven components shall agree upon and declare the arrangements for the provision of lubrication. 5 Rotor balance In general, the dynamic unbalance of the complete

、 rotor assembly shall not exceed2.5g mm/kg. Guidance on balancing may be obtained from BS. . . . 4) , “Balancing quality of rotating rigid bodies”. 6 Brushgear 6.1 Brushgear shall be of rigid construction and dimensionally stable throughout its life. The creepage path between live parts of different

、 polarity, and between live parts and the frame, shall be such as to ensure that leakage currents due to the accumulation of brush or other contaminants will not give rise to a dangerous condition. A suitable insulating coating shall be applied to the surface of all earthed metal in the vicinity of

、the brushgear. 6.2 Brushes should be replaceable without dismantling the machine, and should be insertable one way only. They should be marked to indicate how much of the usable length remains. Flexibles shall be provided on brushes rated to carry more than200mA continuously or a correspondingly hig

、her limiting current intermittently. When necessary the flexibles shall be insulated. 6.3 Provision shall be made for adjustment of the brush position for the best performance, unless the relative location of commutator segments, armature slots and brushgear, etc., is adequately controlled in produc

、tion to achieve the same result. 6.4 The design of the brushgear shall be such that the brush is adequately supported under all conditions of wear of the brush or commutator. 3) Technical Note EL.165 is now reproduced as Section4 in R.A.E. Technical Report TR69088, May1969 “A collection of some pape

、rs on ball bearing research at R.A.E. from1958 to1960”, copies of which may be obtained from the Ministry of Aviation Supply, Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough, Hants. 4) In course of preparation.BSG102:1971 2 BSI 02-2000 6.5 The design of the brushgear and the internal surface finish of the

、 brush holders shall be such that the brushes will slide freely under all operational conditions. Springs and triggers shall not jam or foul the brush holders due to wear over the declared wearing length of the brush. Brush flexibles shall not restrict the travel of the brushes and shall not foul th

、e springs. The design should be such that adequate spring pressure is maintained throughout the life of the brush. 6.6 The dimensions of brushes and brush holders shall comply with the requirements of BS4362:Section A1. 7 Commutators and slip rings 7.1 Care shall be taken in manufacturing to ensure

、that the commutator or slip ring working surfaces are concentric with the bearing journals. With the armature supported at its journals on vee blocks, the maximum variation in reading on a dial type gauge resting on the commutator or slip ring surface shall not exceed254m for peripheral speeds up to

、1800m/min or124m for higher speeds. The maximum variation in reading between any two adjacent segments of a commutator shall not exceed2.54m. This check shall be made after any routine commutator settling procedure. 7.2 When commutator micas are recessed, care shall be taken in the recessing operati

、on to ensure that the recess is in line with the intersegmental slot and that no fragment of mica is left standing above the bottom of the slot. Each recess shall be sufficiently deep to allow for commutator wear between overhauls. 8 Assessment of commutation 8.1 When applicable the quality of commu

、tation shall be assessed visually 5) . Examination shall be made under extreme conditions of load and speed (e.g.in the case of a variable-speed d.c. generator, at maximum speed under rated load and no-load, and minimum speed under rated load and no-load). 8.2 For type tests, on interpole machines,

、it is recommended that a black band test should be made 6) . 9 Cooling 9.1 Air cooling 9.1.1 When required by the individual specification the air cooling characteristics shall be declared in accordance with approved rating data charts 7) . 9.1.2 Unless otherwise required by the individual specifica

、tion the connections for air cooling shall conform to the dimensions shown in either: 1) BS M. . . 8) , “Profile dimensions of flanges for vee band couplings”. or 2) Appendix A. 9.2 Liquid cooling 9.2.1 The requirements for liquid cooling, such as flow, type of fluid, pressure and relevant tests, sh

、all be declared as specified in the individual specification. 9.2.2 The method of connection shall be as specified in the individual specification. 10 Mounting flanges and drive shafts The dimensions for drives and mounting flanges should preferably be in accordance with BS M32. 5) A colour chart su
