11、of test for assessment of the horizontal burning characteristics of specimens no larger than 150 mm 50 mm 13 mm (nominal) of cellular plastics and cellular rubber materials when subjected to a small flame. BS PL 8, Fibrous polyamide material for use as an explosion suppressant and as a baffle material in aircraft fuel tanks Specification. 3 Test variations With agreement of the purchaser, other equivalent test methods may be used. However, in case of dispute, the t

13、est methods described in this standard shall be used. 4 Extraction of test specimens Test specimens shall be extracted from sheet(s) submitted for test in accordance with Annex A. Each specimen extracted shall be identified with the section letter and test specimen number as shown in Figure A.1. 5 P

14、hysical tests on fibres 5.1 Determination of density and density gradient Select specimens A, B, C and D as shown in Figure A.1 of approximate size 240 480 60 mm. Measure the mass of each specimen to the nearest 0.1 g and record: specimen A as m 1 ; specimen B as m 2 ; specimen C as m 3 ; and specim

15、en D as m 4 . Extract three sections (100 12 60 mm) from the central region of the specimen and

17、mount them on microscope slides using a suitable mounting material. Using a microscope fitted with a suitable measuring device, measure the diameter of the fibre at the comparatively straight region between bonds to an accuracy of 0.5 m. Make twenty measurements and state the average as the fibre di

18、ameter. 5.4 Determination of extractable contaminants Select specimen 16 as shown in Figure A.1 of approximate size 25 25 60 mm. Reduce the thickness of the specimen to 50 mm and condition the specimen by drying it for a minimum period of four hours at 70 C. Weigh the specimen to the nearest 0.1 mg

19、and record as m 1 . Extract contaminants from the sample using a 60 ml Soxhlet thimble and appropriate apparatus. Use test liquid consisting of a 70:30 (by volume) mixture of iso-octane and toluene. Extract for a minimum period of three hours under continuous reflux. After extraction, dry the specim

20、en for a minimum of four hours at 70 C and allow it to cool in a desiccator. Reweigh the specimen to the nearest 0.1 mg and record as m 2 . Determine the mass of extractable contaminants as m extractand express it as a percentage of the original mass: 5.5 Determination of fuel retention From a sheet

21、 of material, cut four specimens 150 150 120 mm symmetrically from the centre of the sheet, with the edges of the specimens parallel to the sides of the sheet. Carry out the test on pairs of specimens, with diagonal pairing (i.e. A with D, and B with C). Measure the size and mass (m 1 ) of the speci

22、men to the nearest 0.5 mm and 0.1 g respectively. Place two specimens one on top of the other centrally in a fuel tank of approximate dimensions 180 180 350 mm, ensuring the specimens do not touch the sides of the fuel tank. Add aviation fuel, appropriate for which the product has been designed, to

23、the fuel tank, immersing the specimens. When air bubbles have stopped emerging from the specimens, drain the fuel from the tank at a rate of (500 50) ml/min. When the flow rate fall to less than five drops per minute, remove the top specimen and reweigh as m 2 . Reverse the specimens by placing the

24、bottom specimen on the top and repeat the procedure. Test all the other pairs of specimens. Calculate the percent fuel retention f rof the specimens from: whereV is the volume of specimen P is the density of fuel D is the density of specimen. Report the mean of the four specimens as the percent fuel

Reduce the area of the specimen to 250 1

26、50 60 mm by removing parallel strips 130 mm and 90 mm from the uncut 240 mm and 380 mm edges respectively. Reduce the thickness of the specimen by cutting a slice 13 mm thick measured from the top lower density surface. Subdivide the specimen into five strips of approximate size 50 150 13 mm. Test t

27、hem in accordance with BS 4735. 6 Mechanical tests on fibres 6.1 Determination of grab strength Select specimens 5, 6, 16, 17 as shown in Figure A.1 of approximate size 200 120 60 mm. Mark a central section 25 mm wide in the 200 mm direction. Use a test machine conforming to BS ISO 5893 and fitted w

28、ith rubber faced clamps 25 mm wide and 50 mm long. Insert the specimens with the 200 mm direction in the direction of separation, aligning the 25 mm wide strip with the clamp edges, giving a test length of approximately 100 mm. Using a crosshead speed of 200 mm/min, continue separation of the clamps

29、 until rupture of the specimen occurs. Record the maximum force attained for each specimen and record the mean of the tests results as the grab strength of the material. 6.2 Determination of compression force, loss of compression force and compression set Select specimens 3, 4, 8, 9, 13, 14, 18 and

30、19 as shown in Figure A.1 of approximate size 100 100 60 mm. Pair specimens: 3 with 14; 4 with 13; 8 with 21; and 9 and 20. Place paired specimens on top of each other with their highest density surfaces uppermost, forming a block of nominal height 120 mm. Measure the true height of the combined spe

31、cimens to the nearest 0.5 mm (h 1 ). Using a test machine conforming to BS ISO 5893, compress the specimen to 50 % of its measured height. Carry out five compressive cycles on the specimen using a compression speed of 100 mm/min. Record the maximum compressive force (in newtons) on the first compres

32、sion cycle and the fifth compression cycle as l 1and l 2respectively. On completion of the five cycles, allow the specimen to recover for 60 to 65 min under no load prior to measuring the height to the nearest 0.5 mm (h 2 ). Report the mean value of the maximum compression force from the first compr

33、ession cycle for each specimen pair as the compression force. 35、ing for each test condition: a) the number and date of this standard, i.e. BS PL 7:2005; b) the batch number; c) fabric type and style; d) the individual test results and the mean result; e) conformance or failure against requirements specified in BS PL 8; f) any deviations from the test method as a

37、ng to the lower density surface as shown in Figure A.1. Using a band knife, cut the sheet in half along the main fibre direction. The next cut shall be in the main plane of each half, one 60 mm from the top or lower density surface, the other 60 mm from the bottom surface, as shown in Figure A.1. Cu

38、tting to an accuracy of 1 mm, extract specimens from each section as shown in Figure A.1. From section A, cut specimens from the marked end. From section B, cut specimens from the unmarked end. From section C, cut specimens from the central area. From section D, cut specimens from the marked and unm
