PD CEN/TR 1335-4:2009CEN/TR 1335-4:2009 (E) 4 Introduction During the use of EN 1335-1, a number of problems have occurred because some terms have been interprete

、d differently by different laboratories and/or manufacturers. PD CEN/TR 1335-4:2009CEN/TR 1335-4:2009 (E) 5 1 Scope This Technical Report specifies the definitions of a number of terms given in EN 1335-1:2000, which have been identified by CEN/TC 207/SC 3/WG 1 as being interpreted in different ways

、by test laboratories and manufacturers. 2 Normative references The following referenced documents are indispensable for the application of this document. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references, the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendme

、nts) applies. EN 1335-1:2000, Office furniture Office work chair Part 1: Dimensions - Determination of dimensions 3 Clarifications 3.1 Adjustable 3.1.1 General The definitions given in 3.1.2 and 3.1.3 apply to all relevant clauses of EN 1335-1:2000. 3.1.2 Independently adjustable Independently adjus

、table means that a component/function can change from one position to another independently of other components/functions. It can be continuous, within a range or in steps and may be lockable. It shall be noted that some functions need to be lockable in order that the chair can fulfil its functions,

、 e.g. seat height, seat depth, back rest height, arm rest height and arm rest width. 3.1.3 Dependently adjustable Dependently adjustable applies to chairs, where the adjustment of one component changes the position of another component, e.g. in so-called syncro-chairs, where the adjustment of the se

、at angle changes the angle of the back rest. It shall be noted that some functions need to be lockable in order that the chair can fulfil its functions, e.g. seat height, seat depth, back rest height, arm rest height and arm rest width. If a chair is dependently adjustable, the product information s

、hall include a statement that to that effect, so that the user will know that it is not independently adjustable. 3.2 Determination of point “S“ The following clarification applies to EN 1335-1:2000, 3.6, 5.2, 6.6 and Table A.1, dimension f. In practise, point “S“ is not a point but a range, e.g. 30

、 mm. When determining point “S“, mark the top and the bottom of the range. As a result point “S“ is the midpoint of that range. PD CEN/TR 1335-4:2009CEN/TR 1335-4:2009 (E) 6 3.3 Position of seat and back rest The following clarification applies to EN 1335-1:2000, Clause 5. If the backrest cannot be

、adjusted to a vertical position without changing the inclination of the seat, the seat shall be kept horizontal and the backrest shall be set to the most vertical position without changing the inclination of the seat. 3.4 Seat height The following clarification applies to EN 1335-1:2000, 3.3 and 6.1

、. The seat height does not correspond to the popliteal height. By knowing the angle of the seat and the distance from point A to the front edge of the seat, the corresponding popliteal height can be calculated, if necessary. 3.5 Adjustable seat depth The following clarification applies to EN 1335-1:

、2000, 6.2 and Table A.1, dimension b. Seat depth adjustment changes the dimension from the front of the seat to the backrest. It shall be measured with the seat and backrest positioned as specified in Clause 6 of EN 1335-1:2000. NOTE Adjusting the angle of the backrest is not seat depth adjustment.

、See also the definition of adjustable (3.1). The Figure in EN 1335-1 is unfortunately not correct. 3.6 Inclination of seat surface The following applies to EN 1335-1:2000 Table A.1 dimension e. See definition of adjustable (3.1). 3.7 Adjustable backrest inclination The following clarification applie

、s to EN 1335-1:2000, 6.11 and Table A.1, dimension l, and it applies only to the measurement of the adjustment range. The measurement of the range shall be carried out using the same line on the back rest, e.g. the line of the top portion of the backrest. See also EN 1335-1:2000, Figure 14. 3.8 Leng

、th of armrest The following applies to EN 1335-1:2000, 6.12 and Table A.1, dimension n. There is no change to EN 1335-1:2000, but it is recommended to measure the length of the arm rest using a device as shown in Figure 1. 3.9 Height of arm rest The following applies to EN 1335-1:2000, 6.14 and Tabl

、e A.1, dimension p. Armrests which are up to 5 mm from flat shall be treated as flat arm rests (EN 1335-1:2000, Figure 17a). PD CEN/TR 1335-4:2009CEN/TR 1335-4:2009 (E) 7 3.10 Clear width between the arm rests The following clarification applies to EN 1335-1:2000, Table A.1, dimension r. For type A

、and B, the (+) and (-) columns in Table A.1 states that it is not allowed for adjustable clear width that the dimension is greater than 510 mm and smaller than 460 mm. For chairs with adjustable clear width between the arm rests the minimum dimension of 460 mm may be smaller and the maximum dimensio

、n of 510 mm may be greater. 3.11 Definition of chair types A, B and C The following clarification applies to EN 1335-1:2000, Annex A. Type A: Adjustability of all important functions with largest range of adjustment. Type B: All important functions are adjustable with smaller range of adjustment tha

、n Type A. Type C: Limited adjustability with small adjustment ranges than Type B.
