4、ls containing alcohol are those types of petrol consisting mainly of hydrocarbons which contain either more than 3% by volume of methanol or more than 5% byvolume of ethanol or, if both are mixed, more than 2% of methanol, with the total of the two percentages by volume exceeding 4%. When testing wi
5、th the methanolic lower layer FAM testing fluid, the swelling and extraction effect (change in mass and volume), the change in hardness, expansion and strength properties as specified in the relevant standards, e.g. DIN 53 476 and DIN 53 521, can be determined. Note. Under certain conditions, e.g. u
6、nder the influence of moisture and/or storage at low temperatures, methanolic fuel tends to separate forming a lower layer containing enriched methanol. The meth- anol content found in practice in the lower layer depends not only on the temperature and mois- ture content, but also, for example, on t
7、he inter- val between separation and establishment of equilibrium between the layers. This standard, which pays particular attention to the effect of moisture during the seperation stage, specifies a testing fluid, the methanol content of which cor- responds to average values obtained in practice. M
8、ethanolic lower layer FAM testing fluid did not correspond to any commercially available petrol at the time this standard was prepared, nor is it expected to correspond to such petrol in the future. On the basis of DIN 51 604 Part 1 and Part 2, it may be regarded as a testing fluid for assessing the
9、 behaviour of polymer materials with Scope and field of application regard to swelling and extraction effects and change in hardness, expansion and strength prop- erties when in contact with a lower layer formed from methanolic fuel if the latter contains the above-mentioned percentages of alcohol.
10、In order to ensure the homogeneity of the meth- anolic lower layer FAM testing fluid, the test teyperature should be above OC and not exceed 40 C as long as the test is carried out at ambient pressure. 2 Concept Methanolic lower layer FAM testing fluid is a mixture produced for testing purposes the
