The disc is then rotated at a speed of (30 1) min1 with a load of (294 3) N applied for 16 test cycles, each comprising 22 revolutions. At the end of each test cycle, the test face o

DIN 52108:2010-05 7 6 Specimens 6.1 Shape and preparation The specimens shall be square plates or cubes having a test face edge length of (71,0 1,

、5) mm. Determination of the loss in thickness as described in 7.2 requires the test face and the opposite face of the specimen to be parallel and flat. Any deviation from this requirement shall be corrected by machining or grinding. 6.2 Conditioning As a rule, the specimens shall be dried to constan

、t mass at (110 5) C. The test face shall normally be pre-ground as described in Clause 7 for four test cycles (see 7.4.3). NOTE If the specimens are to be damp or water-saturated (see 7.4.4) when tested, they shall be immersed in water for not less than seven days and wiped with a slightly moist spo

、nge or cloth before each weighing so that the surfaces of the specimens always have the same damp appearance. 6.3 Number of specimens One specimen shall normally be taken from no fewer than three separate samples or work pieces of the same type. 7 Procedure 7.1 Abrasive wear Determine the abrasive w

、ear either as a thickness loss (7.2) or as a volume loss (7.3). 7.2 Thickness loss Before testing as specified in 7.4 and after every four test cycles (7.4.3), carefully clean the specimen and place it with its test face uppermost on the dial gauge anvil (5.1). Using the gauge, make a total of nine

、measurements to an accuracy of 0,01 mm at the positions shown in Figure 2. DIN 52108:2010-05 8 Dimensions in millimetres Figure 2 Arrangement of test points 7.3 Volume loss Before testing the specimen as specified in 7.4, determine its density, R, from its dimensions and weight measured to accuracie

、s of 0,1 mm and 0,1 g, respectively. Determine the density of multilayer specimens using specimens taken separately from the layer subject to wear. If necessary, pre-grind the specimens. Weigh the specimen to an accuracy of 0,1 g before every test and after every four test cycles (see 7.4.3). 7.4 We

、ar test 7.4.1 Specimen mounting Evenly spread 20 g of standard abrasive over the test track, then clamp the specimen in the specimen holder with the test face facing the track and apply a load of (294 3) N centrically. 7.4.2 Grinding After clamping the specimen in its holder, start the rotating disc

、. Continuously return any scattered abrasive to the test track, ensuring that it remains evenly distributed over a path with a width equal to that of the specimen. 7.4.3 Test cycle Subject the specimen to 16 test cycles, each consisting of 22 revolutions. DIN 52108:2010-05 9 7.4.4 Cleaning After eac

、h test cycle, clean the rotating disc and the test face of the specimen. Rotate the test face through 90 (always in the same direction) and spread fresh abrasive over the test track as described in 7.4.2. To test damp or water-saturated specimens, clean and moisten the test track with a slightly moi

、st sponge prior to every test cycle before spreading the standard abrasive over it. Starting from the beginning of the test, apply about 13 ml of water per minute as 180 to 200 drops to the test track from a container having an adjustable pivoting nozzle. Allow the drops to fall from a height of abo

、ut 10 cm onto the centre of the test track 3 cm in front of the specimen, continuously returning any scattered abrasive to the track. 8 Evaluation Determine the abrasive wear of the specimen after 16 cycles as the mean specimen thickness loss, l, in mm, or as the specimen volume loss, V, using Equat

、ions (1) or (2) respectively. The mean specimen thickness loss, l, can be calculated from the specimen volume loss, V, using Equation (3): m16m0lll = (1) RmV= (2) AVAml=R(3) In Equations (1) to (3): l is the mean thickness loss after 16 cycles; l0mis the mean of the measurements at all 9 test points

、 before starting the test; l16m is the mean of all 9 measurements after completion of the test; V is the loss in volume after 16 cycles; m is the loss in mass after 16 test cycles; Ris the density of the specimen or in the case of multilayer specimens, the density of the wearing layer; A = 50 cm2(if

、 the test face area differs from this value, conversion to 50 cm2is unnecessary provided that the dimensional tolerances are maintained). DIN 52108:2010-05 10 9 Test report The test report shall refer to this standard and include the following information: a) type of material; b) sampling; c) specim

、en preparation and conditioning; d) specimen dimensions; e) number of specimens; f) individual and mean values of abrasive wear either as a mean loss in thickness, l, in mm, to an accuracy of 0,02 mm or as a loss in volume, V, in cm3per 50 cm2of test surface, to an accuracy of 0,1 cm3; g) density, R, in g/cm3, to an accuracy of 0,01 g/cm3, if the abrasive wear is reported as a loss in volume.
