、Wire thread inserts for IS0 metric screw threads Part 1 : Dimensions and technical delivery conditions ICs 21.060.99 DIN - 8140-1 Supersedes October 1988 edition. Gewindeeinstze aus Draht fr Metrisches ISO-Gewinde - Teil 1 : Mae, Technische Lieferbedingungen In keeping with current practice in stand

、ards published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), a comma has been used throughout as the decimal marker. Foreword This standard has been prepared by Technical Committee Gewindeeinsatze of the Normenausschuss Mechanische Verbindungselemente (Fasteners Standards Committee).

、Amendments This standard differs from the October 1988 edition in that it has been editorially revised and the specifica- tions for d, and the number of turns for sizes M14 and M16 have been harmonized with international standards. Previous edition DIN 81 40-1 : 1988-1 O. All dimensions are in mm. 1

、 Scope This standard specifies dimensions and technical delivery conditionsfor wire thread inserts (thread inserts, for short) which serve to produce high-strength, wear-resistant internal screw threads in metallic and non- metallic components. They are also used to repair damaged threads and to rep

、lace threads worn in service. Thread inserts reduce the susceptibility of bolted connections to cold welding. They are resistant to the effects of high and low temperatures and to corrosion and ensure a constant coefficient of friction. 2 Normative references This standard incorporates, by dated or

、undated reference, provisions from other publications. These normative references are cited at the appropriate places in the text, and the titles of the publications are listed below. For dated references, subsequent amendments to or revisions of any of these publications apply to this standard only

、 when incorporated in it by amendment or revision. For undated references, the latest edition of the publication referred to applies. Continued on pages 2 to 13. Translation by DIN-Sprachendienst. For applications in a highly corrosive environment, work-hardened grade A4 austenitic steel with a Vickers hardness from 425 HV 02 to 550 HV 0,2 as specified in DIN EN IS0 3506-2 shall be used. 4.2 Surface roughness For the surface roughness of thread flanks, the sp

、ecifications for rolled screw threads given in DIN 267-2 shall apply. 4.3 Axial proof load Thread inserts with a nominal length as specified in table 1 shall have a design proof load equal to the minimum breaking load specified in DIN EN IS0 898-1 *). 4.4 Prevailing torque The prevailing torque shal

、l be as specified in DIN EN IS0 2320. 4.5 Test temperature Testing shall be carried out at ambient temperature. 4.6 Finish The surface of thread inserts shall be bright, except for type B inserts, where it shall be red. 5 Designation Designation of a thread insert of type A, for thread size M6, made

DIN 962). EXAM P LE: Thread insert DIN 8140 - A M6 LH x 12 - A2 6 Service temperature

、s Thread inserts as specified in this standard are designed for use at temperatures in the range from -40 “C to +300 “C. 7 User information 7.1 Core hole Core hole diameters (d2) are given in tables 2,3,4 and 5. The core holes should not be countersunk, since tapped holes without countersink facilit

、ate the introduction of the thread inserts. Where countersinking is indispensable (e.g. in the case of sealing faces that cannot be finished), the maximum countersink diameter shall be equal to the major diameter of the tapped hole. 7.2 Tapped hole The dimensions and limits of size of the tapped hol

、e shall be as specified in DIN 81 40-2. For the manufacture and gauging of tapped holes, special screwing taps and plug gauges shall be used. 7.3 Internal thread The internal thread provided by the thread insert shall have class 6H tolerances. Special tools are required for introducing the thread in

、e.g. British Standard BS 4377), standards issued by the Normenstelle Luftfahrt (Aerospace Standards Com- mittee), and works standards of a number of German manufacturers, the aim being to harmonize the specifi- cations for tapped holes, the associated tolerances, and the product specifications for thread inserts. Users of this standard should note the following. a) Tolerance class 6H as specified here is the tolerance class for the thread insert after assembly. However, in DIN 8140-2, the tolerance class for the pitch diameter of the tapped hole has been denoted as 6
