This document (EN 15860:2010) is, in terms of content, the continuation of the European draft standard prEN 1549 published in 1994 under the title “General requirements of thermoplastic profiles for machining”, which h

This document supersedes the following German Standards: DIN 16809, Hollow rods of circular cross-section of polyester (PETP and PBTP) Dimensions DIN 16978, Polyacetale hollow rods of circular cross-section Dimensions DIN 16980, Thermoplastics rods Dimensions DIN 16983, Holl

、ed above: a) new materials are included; b) the melt flow index (MFI) is now the melt volume-flow rate (MVR); c) impact strength has been deleted; d) technical values have been determined for semi-finished products with defined dimensions to exclude any effects due to crystallinity or geometry; e) t
、echnical values are average values which manufacturers of semi-finished products continuously determined during production; f) guideline values serve as a basis for the material properties of semi-finished products to be specified by the customer and supplier; g) the following values are given as gu
、ideline values: 1) density; 2) tensile stress at yield, elongation at break, tensile modulus of elasticity; 3) melting temperature / glass transition temperature; h) guideline values were necessary because these properties are heavily influenced by crystallinity and geometry; i) the following values
、 have been specified as required values: 1) MVR; 2) viscosity number; j) the MVR and viscosity number are not dependent on the geometry of the product and can be considered as being material-specific. They give a direct indication of the quality of the product; DIN EN 15860:2012-01 3 k) conversion t

、ion, procedure and limit values as specified in ASTM D 6100; 2) figures and examples are included in Annex A; 3) the limit value is 4 %, as in ASTM D 6100; 4) the limit value applies to the width of the porosity line in relation to the cross-section of the sample, measured on a 100 mm-long specimen;
、 m) examples: 1) deviation from straightness; 2) dimensional stability; 3) specimen length; n) dimensional stability: 1) modified specimen geometries; 2) modified test temperatures; 3) modified heating time; 4) systematics; 5) results, deviations from old values; 6) examples. The determination of di
、mensional stability as in the present standard differs considerably from that specified in the previous standards. Specimen geometry has been simplified and measuring points have been relocated to the centre. This seemed expedient in order to simplify production as well as to lay down more specific
、measuring points. The defined distance from the external diameter (in the case of rods) as previously specified would almost be situated in the edge zone of thicker rods and would be located in the centre of thinner rods. The test temperatures were partially based on those in the ASTM standard. Ther
、e were no recommendations for the new materials to be included in the present standard, however. These needed to be specified separately. The Working Group considered the most practical solution to be taking the short-term temperatures described in the literature as a basis. This ensured that there
、would be no thermal damage to specimens during heat treatment despite the longer heating time (equal to the heating time of 6 hours specified in the ASTM standard), which was necessary (as were the heating up and cooling down rates specified here) because the one hour specified in the previous stand
、ards was insufficient for thicker specimens. All these modifications meant that the previously known values for post-shrinkage were no longer comparable with those determined using the new parameters. In a cooperative test it was established that the latter are sometimes considerably higher than the
、 older values. Because there was neither enough time nor a significant number of specimens (for various materials, batches, machining parameters, etc.) for fundamental investigations to be carried out, it was decided that the new standard should only give guideline values and that binding values wil

Please note that there is an error in Subclause 5.1, paragraph 9: Microporosity in the centre of the cross-section may occur in semi-finished products made from POM-H and PP. It should read “POM” instead o
、f “POM-H”. CEN has been informed of the error, and a proposal for a revision of the English version has been submitted to the responsible CEN/TC 249 Secretariat.
