When determining the saponification value of a resin solution in its as-supplied form, the saponification value of the solvent(s) might be included in the result. Because the extent to which this can be avoided depends heavily on
6、 the type of mixture, it is not possible to standardize a universally applicable procedure. A precise method would be the gas chromatographic determination of all solvents, for instance. As with the tritrimetric method specified here, the gas chromatographic method should be based on the use of a po
7、tassium hydroxide solution in ethanol: There has been much experience with this method, and many solvents, oils, simple alkyd resins, some unsaturated polyester resins, and some plasticizers (e.g. dioctylphthalate) will saponify very easily. Because of its high vapour pressure and possible toxicity,
8、 the use of a potassium hydroxide solution in methanol is not as advisable as using 2-propanol, which has a higher (e.g. alkyd resins on the basis of terephthalic acid and simple colophony resin esters) 2-propanol has a superior dissolving power that is at least equal to that of ethanol. In the case

Often tertiary butyl alcohols pr

The saponification of polyacrylates that are saponifiable only with extreme difficulty, phenolic-resin-modified resin esters, and maleic resins is generally best achieved in autoclaves at temperatures of 120 C to 180 C.
