、e 1 NB.1 General Compared with the previous edition, major changes have been made. This national annex describes the basics of magnetic particle testing. The delegates could not agree on all aspects, with the result that Clause 8 is difficult to understand. In the following, the wording is rendered
、more precise. NB.2 Required tangential field strength It is generally accepted that a magnetic flux density of 1 T (Tesla) is required in the component in order to conduct magnetic particle testing. In order to produce this magnetic flux density, an external magnetic field measured in A/m needs to b
、e produced (tangential field strength). The combination of the magnetic flux density that has been produced in the component and the tangential field strength produced externally describes the relative permeability depending on the substance. The required value for the tangential field strength is d
、ifficult to describe in a specific case as the described influencing factors need to be considered. The indicated value of 2 kA/m describes the lower limit. Particularly Note 1 needs to be taken into account. NB.3 Time varying currents Both DC and AC are applied for the purposes of magnetic particle
、 testing. While AC is adequately described by an invariable, for describing DC, the parameters RMS value, peak value and the curve form need to be considered in addition to the periodic length and frequency. In the previous edition of the standard, the RMS value had been considered as sufficient and
、 practice-oriented. In this revised edition of the standard, the peak value is described, too. In order to continue to guarantee reproducible testing, when applying the peak value it is required to describe the curve form of the current in more detail. For this purpose, the so-called crest factor is
、 suitable as a practicable value. It describes the relationship of the peak value and the RMS value of a periodic measurand. Measured peak values shall only be compared if the measurands have a roughly similar crest factor. Instruments measuring the mean rectified value and whose displays are calibr
、ated to show sinus RMS values (moving coil instruments) are only permitted for sinusoidal currents. NB.4 Determining discontinuinities in any direction For testing partial masses in any direction, so-called combined testing is conducted to determine discontinuities. It is specified that only sinusoi
、dal currents should be used for this testing. To adapt the intensities, phase angle control can be applied if the phase angle does not exceed 90. This equals a crest factor of 2. However, in phase angle control, it needs to be considered that the angular range of the resulting magnetic field is redu
、ced by the phase angle (see Lissajous curve). NB.5 Table A.1: Relationship between peak, mean and RMS values for various sinusoidal wave forms This table has been transferred to the informative annex as it only contains basic knowledge of electrical engineering.
