IMETRIC I A-A-58020A ADril 15.1994 TO SUPERSEDE A-A-5802 O December 30, 1993 COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION DRUMS, SHIPPING, STEEL WITH POLYETHYLENE INSERT The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this Commercial Item Description as a replacement for PPP-C-l337B, which is ca

3、ncelled. 1. SCOPE This description covers metal and polyethylene drums intended for use together as a composite packaging configuration (Department of Transportation specification 6HA1) , neither of which is intended to be used separately. This configuration is intended for shipment of liquid or sol

4、id chemicals that do not physically or chemically affect, or are affected by, polyethylene. It is not intended to be used for shipment of concentrated hydrochloric acid. 2. CLASSIFICATION This description covers drums to be used as follows: Type I: Domestic and Overseas, For Solids only. Type II: Do

5、mestic and Overseas, For Solids and Liquids. 3. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS 3.1 Steel. The steel drum shall be designed and assembled so that it can withstand the performance tests in paragraph 5. The drum assembly shall be reusable providing it meets or exceeds requirements set out in Code of Federal R

7、 m. The reusable close head drum shall be of quality polyethylene conforming to the requirements set forth in Code of Federal Regulations Title 49 (49CFR) 170-180. The drums minimum total capacity, excluding outage, shall be the following: Class CaDacitv 1 19.6 Litres (5 gallon) 2 58.1 Litres (15 ga

8、llon) 3 113.5 Litres (30 gallon) 4 208.2 Litres (55 gallon) 3.3 : The interior and external surfaces of all steel drums and chime reinforcement shall be free of dirt, oil, rust, scale and other foreign matter. All sharp edges and metal splinters shall be removed. The internal surfaces shall be coate

9、d with a uniformly applied rust inhibiting primer. The external surfaces shall be coated with a uniformly applied enamel. The enamel and primer must be of a thickness which can be expected to maintain its appearance through a one- trip life cycle. Color, if not olive drab, shall be determined by the

10、 purchaser. Olive drab shall conform to color number 24087 of FED-STD-595. 3.4 Polvet hvlene dru m closures. Type I or II, classes 1 and 2. The closure opening shall be a minimum of 40 millimeters (mm) to a maximum 70 mm in diameter and shall be externally threaded. The insert shall be equipped with

11、 a spout or other means adequate for pouring contents over the edge of the drum without leakage or spilling. Type I or II, classes 3 and 4. The primary closure shall have either a 50 mm (2 inch) national pipe thread or buttress style; while the vent closure shall have a 20 mm (3/4 inch) national pip

12、e thread. If required in the purchase order, a 50 mm closure may be substituted for the 20 mm closure with an appropriate adapter to 20 mm. 3.5 Vent holes. Type I drums - If vent holes are used, the following requirements must be followed: with tight fitting plugs and be in either of the following c

13、onfigurations: Vent holes in drums must not exceed 5 mm and must be provided Two vent holes located diametrically and immediately above the double or triple seam of the bottom chime or three holes on center 120 degrees apart on the bottom head. 2 Provided by IHSNot for ResaleNo reproduction or netwo

Bail ears for type I and II class 1 drums shall be attached by welding or flush rivets. The internal surface at ear attachment points shall be smooth. 3.7 Ma rkinu. Both drum component

15、s, the liner and steel drum, shall be marked in accordance with 49CFR 178. Permanent markings shall be placed on the steel drums bottom and the polyethylene drums top. The drums side markings must be distinguishable from a meter away and may be painted or stenciled. 4. REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS 4.1 Re

16、cvc led materials, The offeror/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials in accordance with Public Law 94-580 to the maximum extent practical and as allowed in 49CFR 100-199. 4.2 Recruired te stina. Fully assembled drum configurations must meet all tests required under Code of Federal Regu

17、lations Title 49 (49CFR) Part 178 and the vibration test required in 49CFR Part 173 Subpart B, for the material being shipped. Type I - Type I drums shall pass all the performance tests listed in 49CFR Part 178 Subpart M, except the leakproofness and hydrostatic pressure test may be performed. Type

18、II - Type II drums shall pass the tests listed in 49CFR Part 178, Subpart M. The hydrostatic pressure test requires passage of a 100 kPa minimum pressure. 5. QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS Test reDo rts. The manufacturer or mark certifying activity, as defined in 49CFR 178.2, shall supply two copies o

19、f the testing documentation to the final user. This testing documentation shall outline packaging limitations identified by 49CFR 178.2 and shipper closure requirements including the test configuration assembly. 6. PACKAGING Preservation.
