1、 A-A-59843 November 4, 2009 COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION AXE, ICE This commercial item description is approved for use by the Defense Supply Center, Philadelphia and is available for use by all Departments and Agencies of the Department of Defense. 1. SCOPE. This commercial item description covers th

2、e requirements for ice axes which are used to assist with balance on moderate angled ice slopes and when anchoring to the ice and snow with the pick and spike. It is also used to chop ice and pound anchors into the snow and as a dead man anchor. 2. CLASSIFICATION. The ice axes will be furnished in t

3、he following types and sizes: 2.1 Types. Type I General mountaineering ice axe Type II Technical ice axe with adze Type III Technical ice axe with hammer 2.2 Sizing. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS. The ice axe shall comprise of an aluminum shaft with a steel

6、head with a pick, adze or hammer, and spike used to move through moderate and steep ice terrain while meeting the standards in the description. 3.1 Type I. The Type I axe shall be comprised of a pick, head, adze, shaft, and spike. The ice axe design shall provide ease of use with typical combat glov

7、es as specified in Table I. TABLE I. Physical characteristics (Type I) 3.1.1 Pick. The pick shall include a serrated design on the underside of the pick. 3.1.2 Head. The axe head shall be a one-piece, ergonomically designed. The axe head shall have 1-2 holes; one for attaching carabiners or webbing

8、when used as a plunging anchor; one for attaching a leash or webbing beneath the top level of the head if desired. The carabiner hole shall be sized to fit all types of carabiners in A-A-59836. 3.1.3 Adze. The adze shall curve slightly downward from the center to each side. The adze shall facilitate

9、 chopping of ice and hard snow for constructing steps and anchors. 3.1.4 Shaft. The shaft of the axe shall be straight, with a grip at the bottom for enhancing the grip when chopping steps. 3.1.5 Spike. The spike shall be a “V” shaped design to enable plunging into the snow. 3.1.6 Protectors. The ax

10、e shall be provided with protectors for the spike, adze and pick. 3.2 Type II. The Type II axe shall be comprised of a pick, head, adze, shaft, hand rest, and spike. The picks shall be compatible with Type III picks and comply with the requirements in Table II. TABLE II. Physical characteristics Typ

The axe head shall be of a modular design with an attachment points for replaceable picks. The axe head shall have one carabiner hole for attaching carabiners or webbin

13、g when used as a plunging anchor. 3.2.3 Adze. The adze shall curve slightly downward from the center to each side. The adze shall facilitate the aggressive chopping of ice and hard snow for constructing anchors and steps. 3.2.4 Shaft. The shaft of the axe shall be bent back away from the front of th

14、e shaft to allow clearance on steep and bulging ice. The shaft shall have a removable hand rest to enable grip when used without a leash. 3.2.5 Spike. The spike shall be beveled for occasional plunging into the snow. 3.2.6 Protectors. The axe shall be provided with a protector for the pick, and adze

15、 to protect the sharp ends from damaging other equipment during transport and/or storage. 3.3 Type III. The Type III axe shall be comprised of a pick, head, hammer, shaft, hand rest, and spike and comply with the requirements in Table II. The pick shall be compatible with Type II interchangeable pic

16、k. 3.3.1 Pick. The pick shall include a serrated design on the underside of the entire pick length with a positive clearance and a dropped pick design. 3.3.2 Head. The hammer shall be of a one piece design. The hammer shall facilitate pounding in snow anchors and pitons. 3.3.4 Shaft. The shaft of th

18、e axe shall be bent back away from the front of the shaft to allow clearance on steep and bulging ice. The shaft shall have a removable hand rest to enable grip when used without a leash. 3.3.5 Spike. The spike may be beveled for occasional plunging into the snow. 3.3.6 Protectors. The axe shall be

19、provided with a protector for the pick and adze, when applicable, to protect the sharp ends from damaging other equipment during transport and/or storage. 3.4 Color. The axes shall be provided in a low reflectance finish and provide low contrast with typical use terrain unless otherwise stated in th

The head shall be made of stainless steel. 3.5.2 Shaft The shaft shall be aluminum. 3.6. Tests. The ice axe shall meet Intern

21、ational Mountaineering and Climbing Federation, Union Internationale des Associations dAlpinisme - (UIAA) Standard 152 for type B (Basic) ice tools. 3.7 Workmanship. The finished ice axe shall conform to the quality of product established by this document. The occurrence of defects shall not exceed

22、the contractors own quality assurance standards and the quality assurance standards defined in the technical data in the solicitation and/or contract. 3.8 Service life. The ice axe shall have no unexpected material or component failures during a continuous one-year cycle. The ice axe shall have no u

23、nexpected material or component failures during periodic use over a five year period. 3.9 Labels/barcoding/instruction slip. If applicable, all labeling, barcoding and instruction slip requirements shall be as specified in the solicitation or contract (see 7.2). 4. REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS. The offer

24、or/contractor is encouraged to use recovered materials to the maximum extent practicable, in accordance with paragraph 23.403 of the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR). 4.1 Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials. Recycled, recovered, or environmentally preferable materials sh

25、ould be used to the maximum extent possible, provided that the material meets or exceeds the operational and maintenance requirements and promotes economically advantageous life cycle costs. 5. PRODUCT CONFORMANCE PROVISIONS. 5.1 Product conformance. The products provided shall meet the salient char

26、acteristics of this Commercial Item Description, conform to the producers own drawings, specifications, standards, and quality assurance practices, and be the same product offered for sale in the commercial marketplace. The Government reserves the right to require proof of such conformance. 5.2 Visu

27、al examination. Each ice axe shall be examined for the following defects as listed in Table III.
