、1:2018 (E)1 ScopeThis European Standard applies to slurry surfacing for roads, airfields and other trafficked areas. This European Standard specifies a method for sampling of slurry surfacing mixtures from production during laying.A method for sampling from the road surface after laying is described

、in an informative annex (Annex A) for evaluation purposes.Production testing needs operators with good practice and is carried out provided there are no specific local or other national regulations that are required to be followed.WARNING The use of this standard may involve hazardous materials, ope

、rations and equipment. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of the standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.2 Appa

、ratus for sampling2.1 Suitable containers with a capacity of minimum 0,5 lIn order to achieve the amount of sample needed, several containers may be used. For closing the containers a tightly fitting lid is recommended.A sampling frame to hold one or more containers may be used.2.2 Stirring rod with

、 a diameter of 20 mm to 30 mm and of suitable lengthIn order to achieve a homogeneous sample, stirring might be required.3 Procedure for sampling1) All samples of the slurry surfacing mixture shall be taken during production, immediately before being laid. No sample shall be taken until the laid mat

、erial appears uniform and homogeneous. No sample shall be taken at the very beginning or end of production. The sample has to be taken until the machine has laid on road at least 30 linear metres of material.NOTE 1 For small machines used on footways and cycle ways the sample can be taken at any tim

、e during production before being laid, this can also be from a batch mix.2) Take the sample by holding the container(s) in the full flow of the discharging mixture until it is (each are) full but not overflowing. NOTE 2 A sample frame is a convenient and safe method to hold the containers.3) Samples

、 of slurry surfacing mixture shall be packed and stored so that no contamination or damage to the sample takes place.4) If the sample is large or has to be divided for testing then it may be necessary to stir the sample continuously until the slurry surfacing mixture has achieved an initial set to e

、nsure all the aggregate particles remain in suspension and do not segregate.4 Sample labellingThe sampling report shall contain the minimum information:a) name of the Producer (Contractor);4 BS EN 122741:2018EN 122741:2018 (E)b) type of slurry surfacing (e.g. base layer or surface layer of microsurf

、dhesive masking tape covering a minimum area of 0,1 m2 shall be fixed on the surface to obtain a representative sample.2) The position of the tape shall be recorded and for roads shall be at least 30 m from the start of production to ensure a homogeneous mixture.NOTE 1 Samples can be conveniently ob

、tained from appropriately positioned masked ironwork e.g. utility covers.3) The tape shall be similar to that used for the protection of ironworks during road resurfacing, and therefore capable of adhering to steel at ambient road temperatures. Minimum thickness of 0,2 mm and minimum breaking load o

、f 5,8 103kN/mm.4) After laying and the slurry surfacing has set, the sample is removed together with the masking tape from the surface.5) The total mass of the sample and masking tape and area of the sample may be optionally recorded (to an accuracy of 5 %).NOTE 2 It is useful to know the mass per u

、nit area of the masking tape so that this can be used to calculate the actual slurry surfacing mass.6) Slurry surfacing sample is removed from the masking tape, noting any residual binder or bond coat adhering to the masking tape.7) Samples of slurry surfacing shall be packed and stored so that no c
