、rements for radioactive noble gas monitors FOREWORD 1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote international co-operation on

、all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may pa

、rticipate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreem

、ent between the two organizations. 2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all interested National Committees. 3) The do

、cuments produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form of standards, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense. 4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply

、 IEC International. Standards transparently to the maximum extend possible in their national and regional standards. Any divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly indicated in the latter. 5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indic

、ate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards. 6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible f

、or identifying any or all such patent rights. International Standard IEC 60761-3 has been prepared by subcommittee 45B: Radiation protection instrumentation, of IEC technical committee 45: Nuclear instrumentation. This standard shall be read in conjunction with IEC 60761-1 (2002). This second editio

、n cancels and replaces the first edition published in 1983. This second edition constitutes a technical revision. The text of this standard is based on the first edition, and the following documents: FDIS Report on voting 45B/335/FDIS 45B/346/RVD Full information on the voting for the approval of th

、is standard can be found in the report on voting indicated in the above table. Annex A is for information only. This publication has been drafted in accordance with the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3. 3 2002:316706CEISBEN607613:2004The committee has decided that the contents of this publication will rem

、ain unchanged until 2006. At this date, the publication will be reconfirmed; withdrawn; replaced by a revised edition, or amended. IEC 60761 consists of the following parts, under the general title: Equipment for continuous monitoring of radioactivity in gaseous effluents. Part 1: General requiremen

、ts Part 2: Specific requirements for radioactive aerosol monitors including transuranic aerosols Part 3: Specific requirements for radioactive noble gas monitors Part 4: Specific requirements for radioactive iodine monitors Part 5: Specific requirements for tritium monitors 4 2002:316706CEISBEN60761

、3:2004EQUIPMENT FOR CONTINUOUS MONITORING OF RADIOACTIVITY IN GASEOUS EFFLUENTS Part 3: Specific requirements for radioactive noble gas monitors 1 Scope and object This part of IEC 60761 is applicable to equipment intended for simultaneous, delayed or discrete sequential measurement of radioactive n

、oble gas in gaseous effluents discharged into the environment. It is applicable to radioactive noble gas effluent monitors intended to fulfill the following functions: the measurement of the volumic activity of radioactive gases in the gaseous effluents at the discharge point and its variation with

、time; the actuation of an alarm when a predetermined volumic activity or a predetermined total released radioactivity is exceeded; the determination of the gas activity discharged over a given period and/or information on the composition of a mixture of different gases in the discharge. Radon is a n

、atural radioactive noble gas. Its measurement is not included in this standard. The presence of radon, or its decay products, may interfere with the measurement of other (artificial) radioactive gases. The object of this standard is to lay down specific standard requirements, including technical cha

、racteristics and general test conditions, and to give examples of acceptable methods for noble gas effluent monitors. The general requirements, technical characteristics, test procedures, radiation, electrical, mechanical, safety and environmental characteristics are given in IEC 60761-1. Unless oth

、er- wise stated, they apply to this part. 2 Normative references The following normative documents contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this part of IEC 60761. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or revisions of, any of these publications do

、not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this part of IEC 60761 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. For undated references, the latest edition of the normative document referred to applies. Members o

、radioactive noble gas monitor equipment designed for the continuous monitoring of radioactive noble gases in gaseous effluents discharged into the environment 4 Classification of radioactive noble gas effluent monitors The equipment may be classified according to the type of radiation detected as: g

、amma; beta; specific nuclides. It may also be classified according to the method of operation: direct measurement with a detector in or adjacent to the effluent; continuous fractional sampling of a monitoring point at a remote location. 5 Overall equipment design As mentioned in IEC 60761-1, various

、 monitor configurations are possible, depending on the exact circumstances and requirements for each installation. Irrespective of these variations, the equipment shall conform to the requirements of this standard as well as those of IEC 60761-1. 5.1 Direct measuring equipment If the measurement is

、made directly by detectors in or adjacent to the effluent stream, only the detector and the minimum necessary electronic assembly shall operate in these environmental conditions. Unless there are special circumstances, this type of equipment shall not incorporate detectors which are particularly sen

、sitive to variations in environmental conditions or require frequent attention or adjustment. The appropriate control and measurement assembly should be mounted, wherever practicable, in a controlled environment, so as to minimize the effects on performance and allow ready access for operation and m

、aintenance. 5.2 Indirect measuring equipment If continuous representative samples of the effluent are taken to a remote location, the sampling and detection assembly (with the exception of the sampling probe and pipework) and the control and measurement assembly should be adjacent in a controlled environment. Where this is not practicable (for example because of the excessive leng
