The UK also proposed a replacement text for subclause5.1 which, the UK considered, would have overcome the problem, as follows. “5.1 Exposure in hydrogen Suitably prepared test pieces (see4.1 and4.2)

The heating shall be turned off and the samples cooled to ambient temperature whilst still remaining in the hydrog

A positive pressure of hydrogen shall be maintained and the exhaust gas passed through a water trap, so that it can then be disposed of safely.” A British Standard does not purport to include al

Bend the test piece, AB in the Figure, by steady pressure applied at right angles to the length, until the e

For the first stage, either of the methods shown in ISO/R398 may be used to bend the test piece to a V-shape. The choice o

In the second stage, bring the two legs of the test piece into contact by steady pressure applied across the open end of the V, for example by closing in a vice. After bending, inspect the stressed surface visually for the presence of cra

After bending, inspect the stressed surface with the unaided eye, corrected for normal vision, for the pres

Polish the section, etch if desired, and examine under a microscope at a magnification of200X, for evidence of gassing or open grain structure characteristic of embrittleme
