21、ts,varnishes andrelatedproducts. Itspecifiesamethodfordeterminingthepigmentcontentofpaintsinwhichthesolidsaresedimentedby centrifugation. Itisprimarilyintendedforcheckingthecompositionduringtheproductionofcoatingmaterialsandasan acceptancecheckforthecoatingmaterialuser.Difficultiesmaybeencounteredwh

22、enthemethodisappliedto coatingmaterialscontainingdyestuffs,carbonblack,veryfinelydividedsilicondioxideorveryfinelydivided titaniumdioxide.Itmaynotbesuitableforemulsionpaints. Thepigmentcontentofcoatingmaterialscanalsobedeterminedbyanashingmethod(seeISO14680-2)orbya filtrationmethod(seeISO14680-3). 2

27、ithsolvent,thesolidparticlesareseparatedoffbycentrifuge, driedandweighed.Thepigmentcontentisthencalculatedfromthemassofthesolidscomponentandthatofthe testportion. 5 Apparatus Ordinarylaboratoryapparatusandglassware,togetherwiththefollowing: 5.1 Laboratorycentrifuge,withanoperatingspeedsufficienttoen

28、surethatthepigmentseparatesfromthe binderandarelativecentrifugalaccelerationofabout250000(equivalentto25000g).Itshallbefittedwith balancedswivellingbucketswhichcanaccommodatesuitabletubesofe.g.50mlcapacity. 5.2 Centrifugetubes,withacapacityofe.g.50ml.Thesemaybemadeofstainlesssteel,thick-walledglass,

29、 PTFEorothersuitableinertmaterial. 5.3 Polished-ballstirrer,consistingofashaftoflengthabout150mmanddiameterabout5mmhaving,onone end,aballofdiameterabout12mm.Thestirrershallbemadeofasuitablematerialsuchasstainlesssteelor glass. 5.4 Dryingoven,withforcedventilation,capableofbeingmaintainedat(125 2)C.T

30、heairflowshallbe horizontal. WARNINGAtthetemperatureused,organicsolventcanformexplosivemixtureswithair.Itistherefore importantthatthesolventvapourconcentrationintheovenisnotallowedtoexceedavalueatwhichan explosioncouldoccur. Forrefereetests,ovensofthesamedesignshallbeusedbyallparties. 5.5 Analytical

32、entrifugetubeweighoutaccuratelyto thenearest0,01gtheamountofsample(m 1 )indicatedinTable1.Selectasuitablesolventorsolventmixturefor thecoatingmaterialwithaslowaboilingpointaspossibleandaddtheamountindicatedinthetable.Forexample, forsolvent-solublepaintsusexylene,forwater-dilutablepaintsusebutylglyco

33、l.Stirthesamplewiththeballstirrer (5.3)untilthebinderhasdissolvedinthesolvent.Thenrinseanyresidueadheringtothestirrerquantitativelyinto thecentrifugetubeusingthesamesolvent,ensuringthatthetubeisfillednotmorethanfour-fifthsfull.Centrifuge untilthesolidparticleshavesedimentedoutandthesupernatantbinder

34、solutionisnearlyclear(thiswillusually takeabout20min). NOTE Itisnotalwayspossibletogetthesupernatantsolutionclearasthisdependsonthepigmentandthebindersystem. Difficultiesmaybeencounteredwithcoatingmaterialscontainingdyestuffs,carbonblack,veryfinelydividedsilicondioxideor veryfinelydividedtitaniumdio

EN ISO 14680-1:2006 3 Afterdecantingthesupernatantsolution,resuspendthesolidparticlesatthebottomofthecentrifugetubeinthe samesolventasusedinthefirstcentrifugingoperation.Makeuptothemarkandcentrifugeforafurther20min, andthenproceedasforthefirstcentrifugingoperation.Repeatthisprocedureathirdand,

36、ifnecessary,afourth time. Afterthefinalcentrifugingoperation,drythetubecontainingthesedimentedsolidsat(125 2)Ctoconstant massinthedryingoven(5.4).Cooltoroomtemperatureinthedesiccator(5.6)andweighthetubecontainingthe residuetothenearest0,01g(m 2 ).
