、 ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATIONMaterial Name Specification NumberDate Para No. Revisions1983 06 23 Released C5N1-501066-4Page 1 of 3DEADENER, POLYOLEFIN SHEET - HEAT EXPANDING ESB-M5G36-A1. SCOPE:The material defined by this specification is a heat expanding polyolefinsheet deadener.2. APPLICATI

、ON:This specification was released originally for material used between adouble sheet metal dash panel to provide improved sound damping andreduced sound transmission on the 1984 diesel Continental/Mark VII. A 1mm thick sheet of the unexpanded polyolefin material is stapled to theinner dash panel be

、fore the inner and outer panels are spot weldedtogether. After welding, when the vehicle body passes through assemblyplant paint cure ovens, the material expands filling the 1.7 mm designgap to provide a “constrained layer“ damped steel sound barrier.3. REQUIREMENTS:3.1 CONDITIONINGAll test values i

、ndicated herein are based on 1 mm thick materialconditioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/- 2 C and 50 %relative humidity for 24 h prior to testing and tested under thesame controlled conditions.3.2 UNCURED MATERIAL PROPERTIES3.2.1 Thickness As specified on engineering drawing(ASTM D 461, 454 g

、load, 25 mm diameterfoot)3.2.2 Density 1.0 g/cc +/- 10 %3.2.3 Ash Content, max 15 %(ASTM D 297)3.2.4 Hardness, Durometer “A“ 80 - 95(ASTM D 2240)3.2.5 Flexibility No crackingTest Method: Bend 50 x 25 x 1 mm samples 180 usingfinger pressure.3.2.6 Tear Strength, min 38 kN/m(ASTM D 624, Die “C“)ENGINEE

、RING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION ESB-M5G36-APage 2 of 33.3 CURED MATERIAL PROPERTIES3.3.1 Damping Loss Factor, min 23 C 82 C(average of first mode on .06 .015either side of 200 HZ)Test Method: ASTM E 756 with the following parameters:. Test strips to be 300 x 20 x 0.76 mm. Bond material between two test

、strips in 204 C oven for 30 min. Disregard weight ratio calculations3.3.2 Constrained Expansion 6.0 - 8.0 cm(FLTM BV 21-1, 1.5 mm and2.0 mm gaps, 10 minutesat 182 +/- 2 C metaltemperature and 30 minutesat 204 +/- 2 C metaltemperature cure schedules)The material shall be completely bonded to both pan

、els andshall provide good adhesion. If the panels can be priedapart, only cohesive failure of the bond is acceptable(i.e., the material shall rip internally leaving materialcompletely attached to both panel surfaces). There shallbe no evidence of material collapse or other materialdegradation. 3.4 F

、LAMMABILITYIn order to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No.302, the materials, portions of components, and composites must notburn or transmit a flame across its surface, at a rate of more than101 mm per min. To demonstrate compliance, the sample size andmethod of testing shall be i

、n accordance with FLTM BN 24-2.3.5 PERFORMANCE - ENVIRONMENTAL AGINGAll materials, portions of components, and composites defined bythis specification that have not been treated, modified orreformulated and exceed a max burn rate of 3.0 in (76 mm) per minas specified by the Flammability Lot Sampling

、 Plan of FLTM BN 24-2,must be evaluated for permanency of the materials flame retardantproperties per ESB-M25P3-A according to the acceleratedenvironmental aging requirements applicable to the basic materialcategory of this particular specification.Any material, portions of components, and composite

、s defined bythis specification that have been treated, modified or reformulatedto conform to Flammability Lot Sampling Plan of FLTM BN 24-2,regardless of max burn rate, must be evaluated for both permanencyof materials flame retardant properties and changes in mechanical, chemical and physical proper

、ept on file at Ford Motor Company. All samples shall produce spectra that correspond to the referencestandard when tested under the same conditions as those specifiedon the master spectrum.3.8 SUPPLIERS RESPONSIBILITYMaterial supplied to this specification must be equivalent to thatoriginally approve

、d. Changes in formulation or processing shallnot be made without prior approval as described in SupplierProcedure I-A.4. APPROVAL OF SUPPLIERS:Suppliers to this specification must be approved by the affected productengineering office. Procedure for gaining approval of a specificmaterial to a new/existing ES-M specification is contained in SupplierProcedure I-A. Approved new suppliers will be added to the EngineeringMaterials Approved Source List.
