APPLICATIONThis specification was released originally for a coating specified wherea black, or low gloss black decorative finish is required. Black oxidecoatings for exterior usage must be
3、 limited to applications which are notsubjected to severe in-service or cleaning abrasion such as windshieldwiper arms and blades.3. REQUIREMENTS3.1 APPEARANCEThe black oxide coating shall cover the base metal completely. Thecolor shall be uniformly black with no evidence of anyreddish-brown or gree
4、n discoloration on significant surfaces.3.2 CASS TEST, min 16 h(FLTM BQ 5-1)3.2.1 As ReceivedThe finished part shall pass the 16 h cycle with noevidence of red rust or other discoloration on significantsurfaces.Note: Significant Surfaces: All surfaces visible on afinished product or surfaces which c
5、an be the source ofcorrosion products visible on a finished product aresignificant surfaces. Except as noted on the engineeringdrawing all significant surfaces shall meet the appearanceand corrosion requirements. 3.3 SURFACE FINISHWhen the low gloss finish is specified for glare reductionsurfaces, t
6、he specular gloss of the surface shall not exceed therequirement of specification ESB-M25P2-A for the part in question.3.4 PROCESSING METHODThis specification is not intended to limit in any way thechemistry or procedure for the oxidizing treatment. Any processresulting in a satisfactory surface app
7、earance meeting the aboverequirements will be approved. All
8、equipment together withsolutions or baths shall be properly maintained and kept free ofdirt or other possible contaminants.3.5 PREPARATION OF BASIS METALPrior to the application of black oxide coatings, the base metalshall be thoroughly cleaned. Cleaning materials and methods shallbe the option of t
9、he supplier. The cleaning process shall beperformed without measurable abrasion or erosion of the stainlesssteel surface. The cleaned surfaces shall be free of rust, scale,grease, oil, paint or other foreign matter.3.6 OILING OR WAXINGOiling or waxing of the ebonized work will impart a high luster t
10、othe blackened surface. It may be applied by wiping, dipping, ortumbling with oil or wax moistened sawdust. Any oil or wax that ischemically inert is satisfactory depending upon part application.3.7 RESTRICTIONSThe use of this coating technique has been found acceptable forexterior applications when
11、 applied on Type 300, nonmagneticstainless steel only. Under no circumstances should this processbe employed on Type 400, magnetic stainless steel for exteriorapplications.3.8 SUPPLIERS RESPONSIBILITYMaterial supplied to this specification must be equivalent to thatoriginally approved. Changes in fo
12、rmulation or processing shallnot be made without prior approval as described in SupplierProcedure I-A.4. APPROVAL OF SUPPLIERSSuppliers to this specification must be approved by the affected productengineering office. Procedure for gaining approval of a specificmaterial to a new/existing ES-M specif
13、ication is contained in SupplierProcedure I-A. Approved new suppliers will be added to the EngineeringMaterials Approved Source List.5. GENERAL INFORMATIONThis information is for direction of the user and is not a requirementfor the supplier.5.1 PRECAUTIONSSodium Dichromate is a toxic material and dangerous to therespiratory tract and eyes. Hands and eyes should be protectedwhen handling the material. In case of contact, flush skin or eyeswith plenty of water for at least 15 min. For eyes, medicalattention should be provided.
