2、 NOT TO BE USED FOR NEW DESIGN 1. SCOPE: The material defined by this specification is a granulated cork and polymeric binder gasket. 2. APPLICATION: This specification was released originally for material used as gasket for oil pans, rocker arm covers, and valve push rod covers. 3. REQUIREMENTS: Al
3、l tests shall be conducted in accordance with ASTM F 104, unless otherwise specified. 3.1 COMPRESSIBILITY 25 - 45 % (ASTM F 36, 100 psi (690 kPa) load) Recovery, min 85 % 3.2 TENSILE STRENGTH, min 120 psi (830 kPa) 3.3 FLOTATION When exposed to the following conditions, the material shall show no si
4、gns of disintegration. . 3 h in boiling water . 2 h at 102 +/- 3 C in ASTM Oil No. 1 . 10 days at 23 +/- 2 C in ASTM Reference Fuel “A“ . 24 h at 23 +/- 2 C in Methyl Ethyl Ketone 3.4 FLEXIBILITY Before and after flotation, para 3.3, the material shall not break or separate when bent slowly 180 arou
5、nd a mandrel, the diameter of which shall be 5 times the thickness of the test specimen. The material shall be conditioned for 24 h at 23 +/- 2C and 50 +/- 2 % relative humidity prior to bending. 3.5 COMPRESSION SET, max 52 % (ASTM D 395, Method “A“, 22 h at 70 C 400 lb (1.8 kN) load) 3.6 GLUED JOIN

Original properties must be maintained. 3.
7、6.2 Tensile Strength, same as para 3.2. 3.6.3 Flotation, same as para 3.3. 3.6.4 Flexibility Specimens containing a glue line shall bend without failure around a mandrel, having a diameter 5 times the thickness of sample, before and after flotation, para 3.3. 3.6.5 Compression Set, same as para 3.5.
8、 3.7 RELEASE AGENT When gaskets are coated as specified on engineering drawings, any release agent applied shall not affect assembly of coated gasket. 3.8 SUPPLIERS RESPONSIBILITY Material supplied to this specification must be equivalent to that originally approved. Changes in formulation or proces
9、sing shall not be made without prior approval as described in Supplier Procedure I-A. 4. APPROVAL OF SUPPLIERS: Suppliers to this specification must be approved by the affected product engineering office. Procedure for gaining approval of a specific material to a new/existing ES-M specification is contained in Supplier Procedure I-A. Approved new suppliers will be added to the Engineering Materials Approved Source List.
