、5 C ADHESIVE, MALE THREADED FASTENER - FOR SERVICE ESS-M11P24-A2 TEMPERATURES BELOW 65 C NOT TO BE USED FOR NEW DESIGN 1. SCOPE These specifications define the performance requirements for adhesives which are pre-applied to the threads of any externally threaded fastener. The applied adhesive shall
、be dry to the touch and become activated only when the coated fastener is inserted into a threaded hole or mating fastener where it then hardens to enhance resistance to loosening. No specific class or type of adhesive (anaerobic, epoxy, microencapsulated, etc.) is intended for exclusive use in this
、 specification, but any composition which will meet the performance requirements below will be considered for approval. 2. APPLICATION These specifications were released originally for materials used for making fasteners more resistant to loosening. In all cases where ES-20007-S100 and ES-20010-S100
、 are specified, ESS-M11P24-A1 and ESS-M11P24-A2 are their respective replacements and are technically equivalent. 3. REQUIREMENTS 3.1 ADHESIVE ELEMENT APPLIED TO THREADS 3.1.1 The length of adhesive material shall be a minimum of 1.5 times the nominal diameter of the threaded fastener, starting with
、in two threads of the end of the fastener. The first thread of the fastener need not be clean of adhesive, but shall allow a finger effort start for a minimum of one revolution after first engagement. The adhesive coating process shall not degrade the specified corrosion protection. 3.1.2 The adhesi
、ve element, when pre-applied on the threads, shall be dry to the touch and shall not cause the fasteners to bond together prior to application. It shall remain dormant until the shearing action of the mating thread activates the adhesive, which after proper curing time and temperature, shall harden
、and form a bond between the mating threads. ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION ESS-M11P24-A1 ESS-M11P24-A2 Page 2 of 5 3.2 GENERAL 3.2.1 During the complete performance of the test, the nut shall be turned while the test bolt is restrained from turning. Test nuts shall be Ford Standard Nuts as liste
、d in Tables I and II. Each test nut shall be gauged to assure conformance with dimensional requirements. Some of the terms used below are defined as follows: Prevailing “On“ Torque - the torque in the “on“ direction, when the nut is completely in engagement with the adhesive portion of the external
、thread, as measured during the initial installation with the fastener in motion while bolt tension is zero. Prevailing “Off“ Torque - The torque in the “off“ direction measured during the first 360 of rotation after the nut has been broken from the hardened bond while bolt tension is zero. Adhesive
、Break Torque - The torque in the “off“ direction which breaks the hardened adhesive between the mating threads while the bolt tension is zero. 3.2.2 First Application Room Temperature Test (30 Samples) The test nut shall be assembled with the adhesive coated bolt until one full adhesive coated threa
、d protrudes through the nut. The maximum prevailing-on torque shall be measured and recorded during the next 360 nut rotation, while the nut is in constant motion. The speed of rotation shall be 10 - 20 rpm. The activated adhesive bolt-nut assembly shall be allowed to harden at 23 +/- 1 C ambient te
、mperature. After 72 h curing time the maximum adhesive break torque and the maximum prevailing-off torque during the next 360 nut rotation shall be measured and recorded. ENGINEERING MATERIAL SPECIFICATION ESS-M11P24-A1 ESS-M11P24-A2 Page 3 of 5 3.2.3 Hot Strength Test (10 Samples) Test procedure is
、 identical with room temperature test (para 3.2.2), except after 24 h curing at 23 +/- 1 C, the adhesive bolt and nut assemblies shall be tested as follows: ESS-M11P24-A1 Condition at 135 +/- 2 C for 3 h minimum. The adhesive break and prevailing-of torque shall be measured in the 135 C temperature
、environment. ESS-M11P24-A2 Condition at 65 +/- 2 C for 3 h minimum. The adhesive break and prevailing-off torque shall be measured in the 65 C temperature environment. 3.2.4 Cyclic Hot - Room Temperature Test (10 Samples) In order to evaluate short run exposure to elevated temperatures (as in a pain
、t cure oven) this test procedure is identical with the room temperature test except that after 24 h curing time at 23 +/- 1 C, the adhesive bolt and nut assemblies shall be conditioned at 150 +/- 5 C for 1 h. After this exposure, the adhesive bolt-nut assembly shall be brought to 23 +/- 1 C for 1 h
、and the adhesive break and prevailing-off torque shall be measured and recorded. 3.3 ACCEPTANCE REQUIREMENTS 3.3.1 Production Validation Test must be completed satisfactorily per Tables I and II with initial production parts before ISIR approval and authorization for shipment of production parts. Pa
、rts must be revalidated completely, or per Section 5 of Ford Quality Control Procedure Q-101 whenever any change is made which may affect part function and/or performance. 3.3.2 In-Process Testing Tests must be completed with production parts on 10 pieces/lot per Item A of Tables I and II. Samples f
、or these tests must be selected on a random basis to represent the entire production as much as possible. APPROVAL OF SUPPLIERS Suppliers to this specification must be approved by the affected product engineering office. Procedure for gaining approval of a specific material to
、 a new/existing ES-M specification is contained in Supplier Procedure I-A. Approved new suppliers will be added to the Engineering Materials Approved Source List. 5. GENERAL INFORMATION The information below is not a requirement for the supplier. 5.1 PART NUMBER Pre-applied adhesive coated standard
、or utility part externally threaded fasteners shall retain the basic standard or utility part number in the title block of the drawing and shall be released with S-100, S-101 etc., suffix to identify the secondary (adhesive) treatment of the finished fastener. The basic finish of the fastener (prior
、 to adhesive treatment) and the adhesive requirement shall be defined on the drawing. Example: For S-100: Basic finish per S-2 requirement, adhesive thread coat per ESS-M11P24-A1. 5.2 SECOND APPLICATION ROOM TEMPERATURE TESTING (EVALUATING REUSABILITY OF ADHESIVE) After the first application test (p
、ara 3.2.2) the nut shall be completely removed from the bolt. The adhesive coated bolt and nut previously tested shall be assembled to the identical position as in the first test, the bolt-nut assemblies shall be cured for 72 h at 23 +/- 1 C ambient temperature, and the maximum adhesive break torque and the prevailing-off torque of the second application shall be measured and recorded.
