2、D OIL ON IRON OR STEEL CHIPS Application This procedure is used as a routine method for determining the amounts of water and oil in cast iron borings or steel turnings. The borings or turnings are used either loose or briqueteed as additions to melting furnaces in foundry and steel operations. Appar

3、atus and Reagents Required Laboratory Balance Capacity - 200 g Drying Oven Mechanical convection - 230 - 250 F Solvents Trichlorethylene or carbon tetrachloride - Technical grade. Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material conditioned in a controlled atmo

4、sphere of 23 +/ - 2 C and 50 +/ - 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same condition s unless otherwise specified. Procedure 1. Transfer 100 - 200 g of a representative sample of the borings or turnings to a weighed Pyrex beaker. 2. Heat in an oven at 2

5、30 - 250 F for 2 hours, cool and weigh. loss in weight x 100 = % H 2 O + volatile m aterial weight of sample 3. Wash the chips in the original beaker with the prescribed solvent until the washings are clear. 4. Dry the beaker and chips in an oven to remove solvent, cool and weigh. 2nd loss in weight (oil) x 100 = % oil. original weigh t of sample Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities.
