2、ation This method is used to determine the ability of automotive cable to carry high voltage. It is also used to determine at what voltage the automotive cable insulat ion will break down. Materials and Apparatus Required High Voltage Source 15 and 20 kVeff A.C. (50 - 60 Hz) variable transformer to
3、operate source from 0 - 20 kV in 1 kV steps. General Electric Catalog No. 153X355 - 9 or equivalent. Beaker 1500 - 5000 m L Deionized or Distilled Water 10 ppm max dissolved solids (ASTM D 1888) Sodium Chloride NaCl; technical grade Salt Solution 3 % (30 g NaCl in a 1.0 L water) Conditioning and Tes
4、t Conditions All test values indicated herein are based on material cond itioned in a controlled atmosphere of 23 +/ - 2 C and 50 +/ - 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure 1. Prepare a test specimen a
5、s required by the applicabl e Engineering Material Specification. 2. Fill the beaker with the salt solution, place the specimen cable in the beaker for 4 h at 23 +/ - 2 C with the ends protruding (see Figure 1). 6、es, Inc. 3. Duration Voltage: Immediately afterwards apply a test voltage at 5 0 or 60 Hz between the conductor and the salt solution for 30 minutes: for wire 0.5 mm 2 3 kVeff max 4. Report any test specimen that indicates puncture. That is, a completed circuit between the test specimen and the sa l
7、t solution. 5. Breakdown Voltage: If puncture does not occur increase the voltage by 0.5 kV/s until puncture or until the following voltage is obtained: for wire 0.5 mm 2 5 kVeff max Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly.
