2、RICANTS Application This procedure is used to determine the film life and anti-wear properties of greases and dry film lubricants by means of the Timken Extreme Pressure Machine operating at 800 rpm. Description of Test A Timken roller bearing cup is attached to the rotating shaft of the Timken mach
3、ine. A rectangular test block is brought into contact with the cup at a prescribed load, after the cup and block are film coated with a given amount of test lubricant. The lubricant is evaluated by the width of the wear scar which occurs on the test block in a prescribed time. Apparatus Required Tim

Weight Loading Mechanism A mechanism must be used to raise and lower the load applying arm at a constant speed of 25 mm per minute to avoid impact

Stopwatch or Timing Device The time piece shall be capable of measuring 8 h +/- 1.0 minutes. Microscope A low power
7、 50X to 60X microscope fitted with a filar eyepiece is used to measure width of wear scar with an accuracy of +/- 0.05 mm. Materials Required Naphtha, Stoddard Solvent, Kerosene or Pentane These may be used for cleaning the test blocks and cups, machine spindle, and block holder. Do not use chlorina

Wash Timken cup and block with one of the prescribed solvents and dry thoroughly. Avoid finger marking specimens. 2. Assemble cup on spindle of machine and
12、 block in specimen holder. 3. For greases, stir the whole grease sample with a spatula to intermix the oil and soap thoroughly. Weigh 0.30 to 0.35 grams of grease and spread uniformly on cup and test surface of block. 4. For dry film lubricants, use thickness of film as required for test. 5. Locate
13、specimen holder on load lever arm with the minimum disruption of the grease or dry film on the block or cup. 6. Start motor and run for 2 minutes for break-in with no weight load on test specimens. If a Falex loader is used, start applying load mechanism approximately a minute after the break-in was
14、 started. Use weight stated in Engineering Material Specification. 7. Run test for specified hours if no score has occurred. The total time includes the 2 minute break-in. For tests that have passed, measure width of wear scar on specimen block in millimeters under suitable microscope. Scan length o
15、f scar and report averaged width. If scoring occurs, discontinue testing and record the number of hours until scoring. Report as “failed; scored with “X“ hours“. 8. Run a minimum of three tests on the same test block when possible to check the repeatability of test time and amount of wear required i
16、n the Engineering Material Specification. (a) All three consecutive tests must pass the specification requirement. (b) If one of the three tests fail, run two additional tests for a total of five tests of which four must pass the specification requirement. (c) If two out of the first three tests fai
17、l, discontinue further tests. NOTE: If a block “scores“ (failure) during a test, the block can not be reused and should be replaced with a new one. 9. Report the following: (a) Hours passed or failed for each test made. (b) Average wear scar width in millimeters of each test that has passed. Chemica
