、FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD BL 001-01 2001 0820 CORROSION INHIBITION TEST FOR ETHYLENE GLYCOL ANTIFREEZE Revised Editorial - no technical change A. Cockman Application This test is a glassware corrosion test used to determine the inhibiting ability of ethylene glycol antifreeze. This procedure is us

、ed as a screening test for new formulations and as a control test for checking uniformity of production shipments. Apparatus Required Metal Specimens - to conform to the following types: COPPER: (ASTM B 152) (SAE 71) cold rolled sheet stock. Type ETP or STP of the standard specification for copper s

、heet, plate or rolled bar SOLDER: Brass specimen with chamfered edges hot dip coated with solder Alloy Grade 30A or 30B of the specifications for solder metal (ASTM B 32). Alternate: Solid solder metal specimen of Alloy Grade 30A or 30B of the specifications for solder metal (ASTM B 32). BRASS: Allo

、esting and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure Test Specimen Assembly Metal specimens shall be cut to a 1 x 2 x 1/16 inch size with the exception of cast specimens which are 1/8 inch thick. Drill a 1/4 inch hole in the center of each specimen. The cast iron and alu

、minum surfaces are sanded with a 150 grit aluminum oxide paper. Scrub all specimens with a moistened soft bristle brush and pumice powder until a surface free of water break is obtained. Rinse the specimens thoroughly with tap water, dip in acetone, dry and weigh to the nearest milligram. Cover a 10

、-24 brass machine screw with a thin-walled insulating tubing, having an outside diameter of less than 1/4 inch. Two brass legs are prepared from sheet stock to a size of 1 x 2 x 1/16 inch. A 1/4 inch hole is located with the center 1/4 inch from the top and 1/2 inch from each side. Mount specimens o

、n the insulating screw in the following order: Brass leg, copper, solder, brass, steel, cast iron, aluminum, brass leg. Specimens are separated with 3/16 inch spacers, having an inside diameter of 1/4 inch and an outside diameter of less than 0.40 inch. Insulating spacers are used between the legs a

、nd specimens and between brass and steel. Brass spacers are used between copper, solder and brass. Steel spacers are used between steel, cast iron and aluminum. The nut shall be tightened firmly to assure good electrical contact. (See sketch.) Triplicate tests shall be made on each solution. A 750 m

、L volume of test coolant is added to a 1 O00 mL tall form, lipless beaker, fitted with a No. 15 rubber stopper which has holes to accommodate a condenser and aerator tube. An air condenser of glass tubing, 20 inches in length and an inside diameter of 10 mm may be used but a water condenser of the r

、eflux type is preferred. An aerator tube of the gas dispersion type with 12-C porosity size is used. (Corning Glass Works, 44 Crystal St., Corning N.Y., Tube No. 39533, or equivalent.) A synthetic water shall be used for all water additions in making up the test solution as follows: (a) For coolant

、concentrates consisting of essentially monoethylene glycol: The synthetic water shall contain 100 ppm of chloride ion added as sodium chloride and 300 ppm of sulfate ion added as sodium sulfate in distilled water. The test solution shall be made up with one part by volume of the coolant concentrate

、to two parts of synthetic water. (b) For coolant mixtures consisting of equal parts of water and essentially monoethylene glycol: The synthetic water shall contain 200 ppm of chloride ion added as sodium chloride and 600 ppm of sulfate ion added as sodium sulfate in distilled water. The test solutio

Assemble the condenser and aerator tube in the rubber stopper and fit on the container. Place the container in a water bath which is maintained at a temperature of 180

、 +/- 2 OF. The water bath should be of sufficient depth to immerse the test container to the depth of the test solution. Adjust the aeration rate of 100 mL per minute, using a Flowmeter or other suitable device. Continue the test for a period of 336 h. Maintain the volume by periodic additions of di

、stilled water. At the end of the test, remove and scrub the specimens lightly with a moistened, soft bristle brush to remove loosely held corrosion products. Tenacious products may be loosened with a scraper. Subject the metals to an additional cleaning procedure as follows: Iron and Steel Electroly

、tic cleaning in a 5 % by weight sulfuric acid solution, containing 2 mL of organic inhibitor (.e. Rhodine) per liter of solution. The specimen is made the cathode, with a lead or carbon anode. The temperature of the solution is 165 OF. A cathode current density of 20 amp/sq dm is used for a period o

、f 3 minutes. After removal, the specimens are scrubbed lightly with a soft bristle brush and pumice. Copper and Brass Immerse in a 30 % solution of hydrochloric acid for 30 seconds at 23 +/-2 OC. Scrub lightly with a soft bristle brush and pumice. Repeat if necessary to produce sufficient cleaning.

、Aluminum Dip for 5 minutes in a solution containing 2 % chromic acid and 5 % phosphoric acid, which is maintained at a temperature of 175 OF. Scrub lightly to remove any loose film, rinse and dry. If necessary, follow by a 1 minute immersion in concentrated nitric acid and repeat the previous steps.

、 Solder Immerse specimens in a boiling 1 % acetic acid solution for 5 minutes. Very gently remove any loosened film with a bristle brush. Each specimen is finally rinsed well in water and then alcohol or acetone. Dry and weigh to the nearest milligram. A weight correction for each cleaning procedure

、 can be determined by running new specimens in triplicate through the same steps given above. This correction should be subtracted from the weight loss determined for each metal specimen. Alternate cleaning procedures can be used if a weight correction is determined in advance. Calculate the average

、 weight loss for triplicate tests as milligrams/square inch of surface area. Chemicals, materials, parts, and equipment referenced in this document must be used and handled properly. Each party is responsible for determining proper use and handling in its facilities. Page 3 of 4 Copynght02001, Ford
