、FORD LABORATORY TEST METHOD BL 103-02 2001 0822 CAVITATION EROSION - CORROSION CHARACTERISTICS OF ENGINE COOLANTS ON ALUMINUM COOLANT PUMPS Revised Editorial - no technical change A. Cockman Application This is a bench test procedure used to determine the effect of engine coolants on cavitation eros

、ion- corrosion of aluminum coolant pumps. Apparatus Required Aluminum Coolant Pump Cavitation-Erosion Test Stand (See Illustration and Parts List, Figure 1 .) Aluminum Coolant Pump Capable of 4800 +/- 100 rpm at 40 +/- 2 OC and generating an inlet vacuum of 40 +/- 5 kPa and an outlet pressure of 103

、 +/- 3 kPa Motor 5 horsepower minimum. Inlet Restriction Plate 20 mm inside diameter sharp edge orifice in 6 mm thick steel plate x 45 mm outside diameter. (Refer to View A, Figure 1 .) Conditioning and Test Conditions All test values indicated herein are bsed on material conditioned in a controlled

、 atmosphere of 23 +/- 2 OC and 50 +/- 5 % relative humidity for not less than 24 h prior to testing and tested under the same conditions unless otherwise specified. Procedure 1. Clean stand thoroughly before ech test. Steam cleaning of the stand has been found to be satisfactory. Other cleaning proc

、 not use a gasket sealer. 3. The coolant under test shall be 15 % by volume of the coolant concentrate and 85 % corrosive test water per ASTM D 2809, Section 5. Analyze mixture for inhibitor concentration and specific gravity. 4. Fill the test stand with the test coolant. 5. Start the test run and a

Pump inlet pressure 34 - 51 kPa vacuum; (#31 in Figure 1). 6. After the above conditions are obtained, increase

、 the coolant temperature to 1 18 +/- 2 O C. 7. The pump is operated for a total of 1000 hours. The test is interrupted at 100, 300, and 600 hours. The stand is allowed to cool. The coolant then is drained and saved for reinstallation. The pump is removed and the interior is visually inspected and ra

、ted from 1 to 10 (see Attachment A for rating system). A 60 mL coolant sample is taken and analyzed for inhibitor concentration and specific gravity. The test is restarted and run to the next inspection. 8. The report shall include the following information: The Test Method Number (FLTM BL 103-02) P
